EXT4 defragmenting

Postby cytotoxictcell » Thu May 31, 2012 11:02 pm

hi,
Has anyone here used e4defrag? I used it today and i did not notice any performance improvement. Then again ext4 dosent really need to be defragged in the first place. I had about 29 fragmented files and was curious on how files are defragged. Apparently this defragmenter only defrags files not free space, so i guess a negative thing about using this defragmenter is that free space will probably become more fragmented.

That's how ext4 works. It defrags files by fragmenting free space (not really a precise description of what's happening, but it gives the general picture. Read the link by mank_in to learn why that's so).
