updating system failed- problems with gconf-service (= 3.2.5

Postby coolrat33 » Fri Feb 15, 2013 3:53 am

Hi,
I'm returning to MINT after many years hiatus.
I installed the latest version, but encountered problems after my internet connection broke during an update.
Now I'm getting this error message:

Code: Select all

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gconf2 : Depends: gconf-service (= 3.2.5-1+build1) but 3.2.5-0ubuntu4 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

I searched online for various similar problems but wasnt' able to resolve this. I have tried:
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Any advice will be appreciated!

I hope there is an easy fix. I really don't want to reinstall everything! Im overseas where the internet is slower than molasses.

This shouldn't be so. 3.2.5-1+build1 is in LMDE and Debian Wheezy and 3.2.5-0ubuntu4 is in Mint 14/Ubuntu 12.10. Please post the output of these commands:

Code: Select all

inxi -Sr

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy gconf2

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy gconf-service

Hi
I guess my system got messed up when I tried to fix my Broadcom modem on this computer, an HP 2140 netbook.
I must have opened some repository that led to this problem.

Here's the result of the codes you asked for.

Well there's your problem. Adding the main Debian repo to your Ubuntu system is a way to bork it.
But before removing that line for good, let's see if you have anything installed from that repo by mistake. Run this command and post its output:

Code: Select all

aptitude search '?origin(debian) ?installed'

Hmm, either it's me providing wrong arguments for aptitude, or your system with too much Debian packages installed...
Let's double-check it by looking at certain packages:

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy libudev0

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy libwebkitgtk-3.0-0

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy multiarch-support

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy network-manager

It seems that something is seriously wrong!
If this looks like a real mess, I'll just reinstall MINT and start over.
I'll wait for your advice however. Thanks :)

Thanks Oscar,
I wasn't sure how to use CODE. I thought perhaps it was only for commands, and did not include output from Terminal. I'll get the hang of this!

The mess was caused by incorrect pasting of the commands into the terminal, that's all.
Nevermind. I see that libudev0 is installed from ubuntu repos, but aptitude's filter seems to work not exactly as I've expected, or I've got something wrong.
Let's do this instead:

1. Remove the line

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
from /etc/apt/sources.list.

2. Run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

3. Run

Code: Select all

aptitude search '?origin(debian) ?installed'
once again and post its output here. I guess it should be smaller this time.

Hi! Thanks. I was away from this computer for several days. Sorry for my delayed response.
I did what you recommended.

The final command

Code: Select all

aptitude search '?origin(debian) ?installed'

displayed nothing in Terminal. Maybe its fixed!
I'll check more and report back. Thanks very much!

Looks good. Actually, I figured out this line I've recommended still contains logic errors and may or may not work.
The fixed (I hope so) command is:

Code: Select all

aptitude search '?narrow(?installed, ?origin(debian))'

If it doesn't display anything, there are no packages from debian repos in your system. You can then run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -f install
to make sure there are no broken dependencies either.
