Please Help - Back to Crashing Again

Post by bitshifter »

AMD Athlon(B) XP 3000+ 2.167 GHz
RAM 1 GB (2 x 512MB)
HD 160GB Ultra DMA
NETWORK Integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface (No Wireless)
VIDEO NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]
MINT Bianca
Current Operating System: Linux 2.6.17-11-generic #2 SMP Thu Feb 1 19:52:28 UTC 2007 i686

I was reading an article on the net when the system crashed this time.

Things I've tried:
- Removed Solo as recommended in this forum
- Removed Democracy viewer as it caused a couple of Crash files to be generated

As you may have seen in my earlier posts this machine has taken to locking up/crashing since I've installed Mint. Below are excerpts from the Daemon.log and User.log files. I'm guessing that this information offers any value.

I very much want to make Mint work, but I have run out of ideas. How should I go about diagnosing the problem?

This is from the Daemon.log file a few seconds before the system locked up:

I don't see anything out of the ordinary, even "message handler not found under /com/redhat/dhcp/...." is normal

I am currently looking at my kern.log, messages, and syslog files and this message is coming up every few seconds:

Mar 17 17:09:14 Robert-linux kernel: [17210466.032000] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [dffeddec] 'on'

My sensors applet says my device temperatures are all in range. I can also see that all the fans are turning.

Could it be that the log message itself is causing the problem? I know it's a reach, but I am getting desperate.

Also, where do you suggest I look to learn about identifying and solving these issues?

Best regards.
