Just curious if anyone else has a suggestion short of manual clean up for this.
I am the world's worst procrastinator, and the worst packrat.
Out of convenience, some time ago I began making copies of my working data by copying it to a couple of different locations.
I have let this get a bit out of control, in that rather than do proper generational backups, I simply copied the data as a full backup on each occasion.
I now have terabytes (~15 or so at last count of just my laptop) of data spread across neatly named directory structures - easy to pull out files or directories if I need them, but very wasteful of space as I have many, many duplicated files because of the full copies.
And there are multiple generations of that in different locations - as we all know a copy isn't a backup.
In the case of the space consumed by my laptop, I want convert the generations of backups to a single structure, somewhat akin to how rsync-backup works, or at the very least consolidate to the most recent copy of all of the data if there isn't an easy way to sort this out.
Anyone have any suggestions - other than nuke it from orbit? (Which I have seriously considered...)
