Update Manager: Failed to Fetch... [SOLVED?]

Post by eatenimpinia »

This might have been temporary since it seems to be (at least partially) solved. But, I'll leave this here in case anyone else needs the processes or if the problem comes back.

Update Manager has been giving me a "Failed to fetch" message all day:
Could not refresh the list of updates
W:Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dist ... slation-en Error reading from server. Remote end closed connection [IP:72.195.167.74 80]
,
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Oddly, the specific item it failed to fetch doesn't appear to be the only one (more on that later).

Looking around here, the usual suggestion is to change repositories. So, I went to Software Sources -> Official Repositories and changed both the Main (rosa) and Base (trusty) repositories (twice: once to the fastest and the second time to something else). When I refreshed the cache, it took a long time (5 to 10 minutes). Looking at the individual files it was working on showed many items Failed (which I can't paste here because the interface doesn't seem to allow copying).

The next usual suggestion is to go to Software Sources -> Maintenance -> Fix MergeList Problems. So, I did. It said:
The problem was fixed. Please reload the cache.
Again, I did. Same behavior as noted, above, with changing the repositories.

The third usual suggestion is a sudo apt-get update. I tacked on an upgrade and got the following (again, after a long time):

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
[sudo] password for dave:

The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
  nvidia-opencl-icd-352
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove it.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Well, poo. That now APPEARS (to me) to have succeeded (I haven't tried the "apt-get autoremove" thing yet). It didn't work before I repeated all this to ask here. There are a lot of "Ign" tags (Ignored?) in the output (the last of which seems to match the one specific problem noted in the "Could not refresh..." error at the start of this, and the other Ign tags look like they match up with the Failed items when refreshing the cache in Software Sources). Refreshing in Update Manager now completes successfully, but it takes a long time (5 to 10 minutes). I'm going to assume the issue was temporary and leave this here in case anyone else finds it useful.

And, here's some more information:

Re: Update Manager: Failed to Fetch... [SOLVED?]

Post by richyrich »

Yes, it was the Steam server that gave you the error. That seems to happen to that server once in a while.
The IGN (Ignored) shows up when there are no new files/apps in the server list, and the list on your computer is current with the one on the server.
