Update Manager - Kernel Update Hangs

Folks, I have just updated an older desktop PC to Mint 18.1 64 bit and so far so good.

First updates downloaded and installed without issue.

Kernel updates (x 3) showed in list.. All selected and "install updates" button clicked.

2 of the kernel updates installed and the third was still in the list upon return to the PC.... Reboot methinks......

Re-selected and set off install updates again. seems to have gotten stuck at memtest (see screenshot and copied output below)

Unfortunately although I use Mint on a number of machines I fear I am not technical enough to resolve this one.. Any help / suggestions gratefully received.

Hello bradshawd and Welcome to Mint,

you can try this in a terminal see what happens:
(Note: you'll have to close the update manager first)

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a

If that works or does nothing - next you need to update grub with this command:

sudo update-grub

Reboot then check to see which kernel is being used.

uname -r

Many thanks for your response..

Went away - Mowed lawn, Washed Motorcycles and Car came back and it has finally finished after approx 3 hours. just needed to be a little more patient....

Apologies for the very long awaited response to this but it may help somebody.

This seems to be something to do with the fact I have two HDD in the desktop machine.

The update seems to spend an inordinate amount of time attempting to discover the correct boot drive and partition before committing. Unplug the 2nd drive before an update and it is completed in moments rather than hours.

Not Ideal, but a workaround. Either that or only perform the Kernel updates overnight whilst in bed...
