[Solved] Use of Google from a security standpoint

Postby Peterjack » Fri Oct 20, 2017 6:09 pm

Is it considered safe to use Google for searching and Gmail from a Mint 18.2 install? I am concerned about the ghost tracking cookie it uses for Win, and so forth. I have just not been able to find near as much (even when searching for Linux solutions!) with the browsers offered by default... why they're so freaking big, right? Anyhow- opinions are welcome if you care to reply.

I use the slimjet browser with the Blur add-on. With that combination I consider it safe to use Google search and gmail however for email I use Thunderbird to connect to gmail using IMAP, which I also consider safe.

Who or what do you want to be safe from? If you inherently don't trust Google with your data, then it doesn't matter which OS you are using them through.

What you're talking about seems to me more a privacy issue than a security issue.

You want a perfectly secure computer? Simple. Buy a computer. Take it home. NEVER take it out of the box.

One word for you:
Startpage
https://www.startpage.com/

It is Google without the tracking and info gathering. Use it for your search and/or home page.

Hi all- a very wide range of opinions as I expected and also wanted. Will definitely try Startpage, bookmarked. Kept Slimjet link also. Have a great rest of weekend all!
