Content blocking extension plausibility?

Post by CaseyMarie »

Hi everyone.

I was just wondering how plausible it would be to create an extension for Firefox which when on YouTube it would look at the avatar and if it matched a database of icons or it found one that was similar it would censor the comment? There's a certain mascot out there which I'm not going to name but it is often associated with some of the worst stuff I've ever read on the internet and being able to get them off my screen would be wonderful. I know you could argue this is anti free speech but...I don't really care I'm sick of these people!

Many thanks

Is it possible? Yes. I imagine you would need it to perform some sort of image fingerprinting but if you want only one specific user icon, that could be as simple as a checksum of the image. Do I know how to do that? Nope.

On the topic of this being anti-free-speech, I don't think it is. You aren't stopping the person for posting. You are choosing not to pay attention to their speech. You may have the right to free speech (in some countries) but I have the right to not listen to you (in pretty much all those same countries).

Well maybe the extension could scan a directory and every time I found a different version of the mascot I could save it to that directory?

Hi "CaseyMarie",

What about these options?

1.) Youtube Comment Filter by Cawdabra
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... nt-filter/

2.) How to hide annoying comments on YouTube automatically
https://www.ghacks.net/2015/01/17/how-t ... matically/

3.) YouTube Comment Snob

Hope this helps ...
