Libreoffice 6.0 is now available via the ppa mentioned in my previous post.

I updated to LibreOffice 6.0 using PPA deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/li ... 6-0/ubuntu xenial main and it worked like a charm.

Does Flathub update automatically like a PPA? I cannot see that it does and I note that it does not provide version numbers nor even apps in alphabetical order. Minor issues maybe until there are thousands of apps!

Go to settings and the startup programs. You'll see there a Flatpak service which is noted to "Apply Flatpak updates", just like the mintUpdate service does. So, the answer to your question is, yes.

If you're wanting the latest software, it goes without saying that you're on the completely wrong distribution, I'm afraid. Consider a rolling-release distro like Solus 3 or Manjaro, if that's your goal; not that I would ordinarily recommend them to someone not experienced with Linux, which I'm guessing you're not so (otherwise you'd know this already and so likely wouldn't have made this thread ), but it's possibly better than installing a load of PPAs and the risk of compiling from source, resulting in a potentially borkified Linux installation. lol

Can't tell you how many threads I've seen online by people stressed out about their installation being messed up, then I or someone else ask if they've compiled or installed things like PPAs, and guess what, they had. Why, you might ask? Chasing the latest versions of software. lol

That said, I've installed the PPA for openshot and kdenlive before, (Skype too, not that they tell you that... ¬_¬) and did use them for a little while, without major issues. Decided it wasn't worth the extra security risk (albeit minor, since they seem to be trusted sources) or the bugs the latest bells and whistles brought in. I'm now quite happy with the tested and supposedly stable versions in the standard repositories. YMMV, of course -- I'm pretty anal about managing a system.

However! ...hold out for Ubuntu 18.04, then shortly thereafter, Linux Mint 19; they will have updated packages, which I'm personally very excited about! I would love a newer version of i3-wm. *drool* I think Ubuntu 18.04 will arrive around April, if there aren't any more delays, thanks to Meltdown and Spectre.

Termy, you make a very good and obvious point which I had not seen. I have had a rethink lately and got rid of some PPA's and a couple of 'deb' installs going back in all cases to the current versions supported on LM Mate. There are a couple of notable exceptions but that is down to me. No issues either way so I will stick with what I have.

that getting rid of Flatpak and associated Framework is suggested. (see: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/4)

I have done that and installed the Lubuntu Software Centre also as suggested and prefer it to 'mintinstall'.

So all running very smoothly and quite content to await the next version.

Yeah, I always get rid of things like flatpak and snaps, because they're just too new at the moment, at least for my taste. I'm very intrigued with their progress though! Seems like a cool concept.
