[Solved] Opera browser 50

Post by kc1di »

Since opera was updated to version 50 I've been unable to play any videos in it. Anyone else using opera and can you play videos?
I really like opera but may have to switch until this if sorted out :(

Any help appreciated. Have googled it and haven't found a solution to the problem.

There was an issue similar to this with Vivaldi. It had to do with the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package not being available yet for Chromium version 64. Opera and Vivaldi are both based on Chromium, so it may be a similar issue.

Here is the link to the instructions for Vivaldi, which might help point you in the right direction https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-1-14-l ... utoupdate/. But it seems to no longer be an issue. Is your chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra up to date?

Are all the videos unable to play on this link, or just H.264? Test which videos, if any, work at this link: https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html

I would still suspect it is a codec issue. Maybe Opera 50 does something different than Vivaldi.

I remember when the codec issue cropped up in recent Vivaldi snapshots, and some people were using a solution that was using libffmpeg.so that was available for Opera Developer.

I think this might have been it. Search the comments for Opera. The difference would be that you would have to place the updated libffmpeg.so file in a location that Opera uses instead of the one Vivaldi uses.

Thanks ugly,
Libffmpeg.so is installed and found in Lib/opera so not sure where else I could put it. It still does not work. Though all the videos on the link you supplied does work and the same videos play well in Chrome. They are embedded video on foxnews.com. Not sure what format they are using.
Thanks for your help.

The videos in question play well in Chrome, Seamonkey and FF. So it's something to do with the latest Opera. Will do more seeking but for now will just use Chrome on that site. If anyone finds a cure please chime in :)

kc1di,

Checked it out with version 50 here, and wasn't working with foxnews on my machine either.

If you're the adventurous type, you can try the current beta, 51.0.2830.23. Just tried it out and foxnews is working on just fine here.

If I understand correctly, your Opera version prior to the v50 update was working OK? If its working before, and since, there must be a minor bug or glitch in v50.

Thanks Eric,
I was on my way to trying the beta, yes it worked perfectly in version 49 but something broke in 50 or something has changed with Mint updates.
Strange because version 50 works ok on Manjaro 17.1 no problem. Will give 51 a try and see if it works here.
Cheers!

I have Linux Mint 18.3 With Opera 50.0.2762.67 stable. It was working fine until Mint did some updates, now videos will not play on Facebook, Youtube is fine. (a file in the update causes the issue and I don't know which one it was).
The update was a few days ago (around Feb 1, 2018)..

I also have Opera 51.0.2830.23 beta which works fine on both Facebook and Youtube.
Chromiun 64.0.3282.119 works fine on both Facebook and Youtube.
Firefox works fine on both Facebook and Youtube.

I have tried to uninstall Opera stable 50 and reinstall etc.

I do have the latest flash-plugins.
I also have the latest chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

I have the exact same issue on Ubuntu 17.04..

Not working H264 videos are caused by mismatching between chromium-codecs-ffmepeg and version of Chromium on which is Opera based.
Opera 50...something is based on Chromium 63...something, but Chromium codecs were already updated within Mint up to version 64...something
So logically Opera 50 can't play H264 videos.

Opera 51 is based on Chromium 64 therefore it can play H264 videos smoothly.

The solution could be to downgrade chromium codecs or wait for release of Opera 51.(there is RC already https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2018/02 ... candidate/)
I'm waiting for version 51.

Thanks Hrabě,
I'm already using Opera 51 beta and it's working well for me so will stick with it until final comes along and hopefully chromium-ffmpeg is not update to a newer version before it arrives.
