If you just get replies such as "you can't be hacked, it's Linux" - then I suggest you try a forum with better informed members, maybe devoted to security.
Nobody said that.

Don't be gullible. This poster just signed on so has no history on this forum. My conspiracy theory is that they made this up as they could not actually hack Linux themselves. This could be an attempt at spreading fear among the users. I for one am not afraid which is one reason I can see right through stuff like this.

I apologize to the OP if I am wrong but I do not believe in coincidence.
"Gullible" would be having "conspiracy theories" ;)

You are wrong and I accept your apology. I only started using Linux Mint a few weeks ago and had no reason to join the forum or ask any questions until now, thanks to questions already answered in these forums and the Ubuntu forums. I am not trying to spread fear, what a ludicrous suggestion that is! I like Linux Mint and would happily recommend it to anyone.

If you think you can "see through stuff like this" you need to think again as there is nothing to "see through".

Like I said, I apologize and am glad you took my admittedly snarky remarks so well (I think). Anyway welcome to the forum. Again, I apologize and hope you keep on posting.

Re: Not another Mint anti virus question.

greerd, i think you have hit the nail right on the head. I did leave VNC open with no password required and I didn't have Mint firewall enabled. Truly stupid mistakes which I will not make again. Having checked my router with GRC Sheilds Up I believed that no-one could access my network from outside so I was sloppy.

Mod note:
all comments about this issue that were in the thread 'Not another Mint anti virus question' have now been merged into this one. This makes for a slightly messier thread, but at least everything about this issue is in the same place now.

Okay, now you've learned a thing or two about what not to do anymore... specifically, use VNC without a password, and leave VNC running.

If I were you, I'd keep in mind that the attack that you saw in the terminal may not have been the only one that happened. Maybe someone else was in there too, but did know how to hide their tracks, or maybe the stuff in the terminal was a decoy.
I would consider this system to be compromised; since it's a relatively new installation, I would start over and simply reinstall.

Agreed, Moem, that's exactly what I will do.

Thank you, and everyone else who replied.
