[GAVE UP] went back to 17.3 Mint 17.3 to 18.3 restore

Post by see3ducks »

is a person supposed be able to restore a backup created with backup/restore tool on v 17.3 to v 18.3?

#1 if I try to restore software selections it says programming error in aptdaemon

#2 if I try to restore my mp3 files for example it keeps drilling down to each individual file and then shows blank. I was hoping to restore a full directory since it was supposed saving the entire path.

#3 When doing a software selection backup the backup tool does not ask for a location. It just sticks it on the main HD.

Thank you

Honestly: Use a reliable backup program. I recommend back in time.

For backing up softare selection and such I suggest to take a look at Aptik.

@Cosmo.
Not to crash into someone else's thread, but I think this question is relevant here:
If I use Aptik to restore my S/W selection from 17.3 to 18.3 and if some of the software for 18.3 is newer than the 17.3 versions, will Aptik automatically install the later 18.3 version, or will I have to upgrade it manually later? I had asked some questions regarding Aptik in the S/W forum, but never got a real answer. That thread is here:

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

From their site I was following the directions for installing. (I am greener than green) The part of "sudo apt-get install aptik" came back with no destination specified. So how do I install it?

Did you ad successfully the PPA to your sources list? You can check this with software sources -> PPA.

I can now see it, BUT when I try to look for my USB drive, it doesn't show even though it is mounted and its icon shows on my decktop.
Ideas?

Now it gets confusing.

I am not clear, whether you have installed Aptik or not.

And I have no idea (because you didn't say it), where you exactly are looking for your USB drive?

Yes, Aptik IS installed. it was done through software manager. There was only one offering. It is called "Aptik Migration Utility v17.10". That was the only choice. it "looks" nice but doesn't recognize my USB drive. If you want I can try to make a screenshot of the PPA's.
Thanks

Do you speak about LM 17.3 or 18.3? The ppa ppa:teejee2008/ppa does not offer Aptik version 17.10 for Ubuntu 14.04 (base of Mint 17.3).
