After reading about the issues people have had with the patched kernels, I was a bit hesitant to update. I installed the 3.13.0-141 kernel (vs. the -139 kernel that I assume was the latest at the time of the blog post). The new kernel has not presented any problem with my sound or graphics (I am using the AMD Catalyst driver with Radeon HD 8670D hardware). VMWare Workstation Player 12 told me it would need to recompile multiple modules to work with the new kernel, which it did. The guest OSes seem to work fine.
So, while YMMV, it seems like you shouldn't face too much trouble updating.

3.13-141 kernel seems good--VMWare, audio, graphics

Also noting that the 3.13.x kernel is Long Term Support (LTS) until April 2019.
