(Solved & Solved) How do I print a poster?

Post by Cinammon32 »

What I'm trying to do here is break up an image (poster, map, picture) so that I can enlarge the image onto 4 sheets, 6 sheets, etc. that I can trim and tape together. In my case it's an old (1850s) southern Ontario map that I'd like to post on my wall. Genealogy stuff . . .

I did manage it by cropping the image into 4 equal sized portions with GwenView but I found it tedious and very touchy to arrive at the same dimensions for each portion. If I could save a custom size it would be great but don't think I can?

I'm hoping that someone can suggest software that will simplify things.

I would take the file to an Office Depot and have it properly printed on an
appropriately sized sheet.

For the poor unknown Linuxer:

You have a ink jet printer maximum format letter or legal?
Look at the maximum print area - this can vary, depending on the printer type.

I do the following with GIMP (Yes - with Photoshop if it gets paid ...)

1st Rule! Always work with copies!... ... !

Open the picture, create a grid on a new layer above the original image (minimum line width) - slightly smaller than the maximum print area (- 3-4 mm metric, I'm European...)

Choose a suitable color for the grid, for example: it can also be white...

Play with the grid until it fits well with the original picture. If it fits, merge all layers

Now you can cut out sheet by sheet - so that the boundary lines are still visible

Save cut by cut, print all, and you have all the registration marks printed in every picture

Take the knife, cut it out, glue it together...

Hi absque fenestris

did I mention "software that will simplify things"?

I've saved and printed out your suggestion which will go into my book of helpful hints. For the number of times in a year I want to do this and my lack of experience with Gimp, this method probably won't get used but now at least, I'm aware of it.

I thank you for your suggestion.

At 20 I had a Nikon F2. 3 Settings: ASA - Aperture - Time. Focused by eye...
... ... ...
Now I have a Nikon D3300: Do you seriously think that something has become easier?

Check to see if your printer has that feature built in. Some printers do.

Very sarcastic: Yes after you joined such a strange community, with email-address, birthday, sex and what else ...
and with inexpressibly childish illustrations à la mamma, dadda, gaga, blabla

Buy a Wacom Tablet as an adult graphic artist or a Canon printer... or a Mac

1. Wacom drawing tablet setup > Software ArtRage, bundled with tablet
2. Canon printer setup
3. other Canon printer setup > Printing utilities for books, calendars etc.

Working for customers - is incredibly fun, if you have to make all the inputs to activate the included software

Hey! Good news! Look for Photoprint
I needed it to reduce pictures. Conversely, it works as well.
Nice.

1. Just got my poster (20"x30") back from Staples. Colour map 3.5M. It turned out beautifully!
2. Photoprint - and yes it does enlarge! I finally had some time to play with the program. A bit confusing to start with but works well and will get used for enlargements in the future when I'm happy with the cut & Paste approach.

Feedback was great. Thank you.

Hi Cinammon32,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

+1 for PhotoPrint

+ 1 for using an office supply store or printing service to actually print a poster because it can use a fair amount of ink to print photo quality posters, so it may actually be less expensive to take it somewhere to get printed.

Poster printing in Linux Mint on A4 sheets

pdfposter is another application for print posters from pdf files.

Hope this helps ...
