Making the Font larger in Cinnamon Menu

Post by HarryX »

Hi, Can anyone help I like to make the Fonts and icons larger in the Menu on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon, this is for a friend who is partially sighted, every thing else can be adjusted for him except the Menu and I have tried the Text Scaling Factor but that causes problems else where. If there is a Menu that can be replaced from the default menu that’s fine but it needs to be stable remembering the sight issue and he not that good not but not that bad with computers.

Lower left corner (Mint icon) click, System Settings (looks like gears) click, Fonts click.

Enjoy - many many choices to be made.

Hi Linux Bill,
Thank you but those setting do not make the fonts bigger in the Menu, they do work but not in the Menu.

I guess you edit a .css file for the theme (in 2014, anyway):

Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

There are several Font scaling compatible cinnamon themes available via the themes app or from Cinnamon Spices. E.g https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... ew/ScaleUp
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

You can find the cinnamon.css file at: /usr/share/themes/Linux Mint/cinnamon

I did an edit on it to change (increase) the size of the scroll bar.

Be careful - you can most assuredly screw up the works making changes to this file.

I did all my font changes from System Settings. You mileage may vary.

HI Linux Bill,
So here the problem, I need to find a way to make the Fonts and Icon larger in Linux Mint 18, now I am not familiar with cinnamon.css, but the user won't be either so something is needed that can be done from the setting or similar, I will look at smurphos suggestion in the hopes that I can find something simple to use, I am very surprised there was nothing build when doing LM18 however it maybe hard to do not a developer.

Hi to expand a little bit on my previous post - if the theme supports font scaling then all theme elements (panel, menu etc) will react to the 'Text Scaling Factor' setting in Cinnamon Settings / Fonts or the 'Large Text' option in Accessibility settings - this actually just sets Text Scaling Factor to 1.2.

This does work on all themes but those that support font scaling have a more dramatic impact.

Also helpful in Accessibility settings will be Desktop zoom which is an on demand screen magnifier and potentially Screen Reader.

At the time of writing these themes support font scaling properly. One of the dev team brownsr maintains the first 5, I maintain the Cinnamox themes and recently updated them following his lead.

Scaleup - https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... ew/ScaleUp - this one by default has a bigger font than normal so is probably your best option.
Photocopy - https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... /Photocopy
Graphite-one - https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... aphite-One
Graphite-zero - https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... phite-Zero
Bela-Lugosi - https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... BelaLugosi

Any of the eight Cinnamox themes.

https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... -Aubergine
https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... Gold-Spice
https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... ox-Heather

https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... osso-Cursa
https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... llow-Grove
https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/t ... amox-Zanah

For desktop icon size you need to delve into Nemo preferences and set a higher than 100% default size for Icon View Defaults
