And if so, where does it live?
The reason I ask is that when I shut down, after cinnamon has closed, an error message flashes up on the screen. Think it might be memory related, but it's only there for about a second - not long enough to read and even trying to take a video with my camera - too blurry to read.
Running cinnamon 18.3 on a T430.
Is there a shut down log?

Re: Is there a shut down log?
There is no Shutdown log as such. Once the local files system is shutdown no further log entries are saved.
What there is will most likely be found in /var/log/kernel.log or /var/log/syslog .
you can try looking at systemd's journel which may reveal something. use this command you can look through this journal and see if you notice any errors between boots if you append the command with -n250 it will show only the last 250 lines in the journal.
Good luck.
