After sleep Mint 18.3 64 Cinnamon won't shut down- Quit becomes logout-updated

Post by Peterjack »

Hello all- this does not seem to fit well anywhere else, nor have I been able to find this exact issue searching online. It's not at all that it won't wake after sleep, it wakes the same as when I sleep on the Windows side, it's that Quit now functions as if it were Logout and there is no way to shut it down without the power button hold down, not a great option for my machine's health. If I go ahead and log back in the same issue persists. Here's some machine info to start:

I was surprised about the very new BIOS in your device. > Bios: LENOVO v: 0XCN44WW date: 04/12/2018

I looked at Lenovo's official Lenovo support page and I have to say I have rarely seen anything so idiotic.
https://support.lenovo.com/ch/de/downloads/DS101228
The official proposal for exactly your device (80SM v: Lenovo ideapad 310-15ISK) was sometime from August 2015...

Have you recently replaced the original 4GB RAM for a new 8GB RAM?

@absque fenestris- Thanks for the reply. (1) Lenovo's automatic update suggested I install the new BIOS just the other day. I ignore these things for most programs I have, but not the hardware or browsers. Of course, afterwards I had to re-edit EFI boot order just for fun... However, the problem pre-dates the new BIOS. (2) This unit came loaded with 8 GB ram as purchased. In fact, the newer DDR 4 ram tipped the scale for me from a similar Dell.

Hello Peterjack

Check your settings for Hibernate and Sleep mode.
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... amon-first

To reawaken very deep sleep devices there is a keyboard input:
Hold CTRL + ALT + ? and slowly type

R E I S U B

about the question mark:
I'm sitting at a Mac keyboard now and it's also Swiss German... on Windows keyboards it was PrintScreen if I remember correctly.
about REISUB you are guaranteed to find many entries here in the Mint Forums. Start a search.

You have 12GB RAM installed, your SWAP partition is 4.9GB - could there be a relation here?

@absque fenestris (1) I am not even trying hibernate, it does not work on any of my three dual boot systems and I read over and over again it probably never will- just Sleep- so no, small swap is not a factor. (2) Thanks for reisub, I do have to use that all the time on the home xfce server- the graphics card will not come awake after it is "energy saved" though system is running and print server and network shared drives all still work, etc. Haven't solved that issue either, but not here...

Again, my issue isn't waking, it wakes fine, but then Quit only logs me out and there is no way to shut down- though reisub might work and I have not tried- again thanks! Didn't see the application to this issue up to now and it beats holding the power key down if it works! Oh yeah- you are correct for anyone reading- must hold down prtscn while typing that.

I will read through the link you've provided as well, maybe I can find something to help. Thanks, Pete

It's annoying when all these things don't work.
At least the Lenovo request for the BIOS update is not bad. My bad opinion about Lenovo support via their homepage is relativized here.
It would be nice if Linux would finally be supported by the big manufacturers.

I really don't know what the manufacturers have to lose: 96.078% or what ever stay with Windows(R) anyway and with the others they could win loyal customers...

That's just one reason why I don't allow "suspend" or "hibernation" on any laptops.
Turning OFF a PC by holding down the power button will eventually lead to file corruption, and a reinstall of the OS.

There is always the option to use Terminal shutdown 0

That will close things down properly and force the PC to power off.

@ AZgl1500 Thanks for the new idea. I probably should have thought of looking for a terminal command, but I didn't. I will try both the ideas I have been given here to avoid damaging my machine with power key forced-off! If either or both work I'm good to go even if the GUI won't cooperate!

I will try soon and update the heading if it works. -Pete

Well, well well- niether REISUB nor Terminal would work, but I did learn something new testing- it Wakes and Quits fine after Suspend UNLESS I unplug it and take it inside while I run an errand away from the house- the reason I want Sleep[Suspend] to work in the first place.

Also, I tried Restart instead of Quit and got an unending (let it run 45 minutes) lines of white text on black background mainly referencing a USB flash drive and mouse over, and over, and over again. Oddly, by reflex I tried CTRL+ALT+DEL and it restarted!

Lastly- and this may be important- I forget I encrypted my HOME on install (didn't know what I was doing, first dual boot, but not altogether unhappy about it).

Just in case someone can help here's a copy of my Terminal efforts while it was in the state before Restart was tried:

Code: Select all
