how to do "picture-in-picture" in Mint?

Post by jimallyn »

Some televisions have a "picture-in-picture" feature, where you can have most of the screen taken up by one channel, and use a corner of the screen to show what's on another channel. I would like to do something like that on my computer. I often have music from Youtube playing while doing other things on the computer. Suppose I'm writing a document in LibreOffice, enjoying the music, and suddenly there's a blistering guitar solo I'd like to watch. I'd like to have that Youtube video playing in a corner of the screen so all I have to do is glance up at the corner of the screen to see it. It would also be nice to be able to swap the two pictures, and make the video in the corner of the screen take up most of the screen and put the other application up in the corner. Maybe switch by clicking on the small corner image? There must be some way to do this, but I have no idea what it would be. Ideas?

If you don't mind using Opera browser, it has a video pop-out functionality you might want to have a look at.

The solution is to glue two computers together, or glue an iPhone onto your regular monitor:

Don't most media players have an "always on top" setting? I know I've used my PC TV tuner that way...have the display in a small window that is always on top of whatever app I"m working with.

In Xfce (not sure about others) right clicking in the titlebar of any window gives me that option. Of course, there's no way to "flip" the windows with this.

this all depends on your graphic setup. most window managers have sticky window if you want to go that way or with nvidia you can make extended desktop if you use 2 monitor. you can tear out a chrome tab and then zoom out (max is 25%). but picture in picture needs it's own software like https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/05/flo ... -extension

Same with fluxbox.

Raise one, lower the other [Edit: not even that...], and resize, maybe all with "xdotool" - which should work for all DEs..?:

Code: Select all

xdotool windowsize $(xdotool search --name "Mousepad" | tail -1) 400 400

Thanks for the tips! I will give them a try. Except if I was going to glue a phone to my monitor, it would not be an Apple phone, it would be an Android device.

On Cinnamon 'always on top' is available from the titlebar menu button for all windows...

I often have music from Youtube playing while doing other things on the computer
in chrome address bar type the first flag and enable followed by second and enable then relaunch. when you watch a youtube rightclick the video twice (it doesn't have to be a quick double tap just casual click once then click again) *the first will the be video stats the second will be the cast picture in picture menu. you can now move the small window anywhere you want and resize it however big you need. if you close the page the video is gone so page needs to be open. if you minimize chrome the picture in picture is still on desktop. have no clue if picture in picture works with other sites yet.

chrome://flags/#enable-surfaces-for-videos <<< change to Enabled
chrome://flags/#enable-picture-in-picture <<< change to Enabled

for those that do not like the new look of chrome Version 69.0.3497 you can restore the old tabs with

chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md <<< change it to Normal )this will disable the new page customization

Hi jimallyn,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well. Thanks "trytip" and others for their information.

1.) If the browser already has a video pop-out option like Opera, you can use that.

2.) There are various browser extension add-ons to right-click and "open with" an external or local multimedia player. Check for browser addon in the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" as well.
- open with MPV
- open with VLC
- open with external app

Automatically Open YouTube Links in an Uncluttered Viewer
https://lifehacker.com/automatically-op ... 1825389630

3.) There may also be Linux Mint applets, desklets, widgets, etc... to view videos or webpage or webslice in a desktop window. KDE has a "widget" called "plasmatube" which I just tried, but could not get it to play yet in my Linux Mint KDE 18.3.

4.) Someone could create a Linux application (maybe there already is one) for playing videos using the online videos url address.
SMtube, YouTube Viewer, etc...

SMPlayer Youtube Browser. Play YouTube videos with your favorite media player
