Problem adding packages [SOLVED]

Post by yebeni » Fri Jun 08, 2018 7:03 am

Hi,
After upgrading, due to a problem with an Xsession launcher, I now have problem installing new packages. Here is the output of the packages manager
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintinstall/AptClient/AptClient.py", line 80, in _run
cache.commit(acquire_progress_monitor, install_progress_monitor)
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/apt/cache.py", line 519, in commit
raise SystemError("installArchives() failed")
SystemError: installArchives() failed

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I read that the question is solved.
I have tried to follow the discussion but finally I can't find what is the exact solution.
Could someone help me by giving me the solution and also
why I got this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Is this about Mint 19? Because that is not officially supported yet. I'm not saying that the might not be someone willing and able to help, but it's a long shot.

Hi,
no I am running LM 18.1 (Serena). But I have upgraded yesterday because, after installing Python3.6.5, I got a problem with my Xsession.
I could no more see desktop background and the menu.
Finalliy I solved the problem by removing virtualbox.
And now even when I try an "apt-get install package" I get the following (this is for vim-addon-manager):

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ sudo apt-reinstall vim-addon-manager
vim-addon-manager is not currently installed, so it will not be reinstalled.

Can you use the Mint Update Manager to remove some of the old kernels you aren't using anymore? to make room for the new?
You have about 28 megs left in your /boot, and trying to fit in an updated kernel, which takes about 35 megs or so . . :(

Here is the content of my /boot:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yebeni@YBK-ASUS-UX303LB ~ $ ls -F /boot/
abi-4.4.0-127-generic initrd.img-4.4.0-53-generic System.map-4.4.0-127-generic
abi-4.4.0-53-generic lost+found/ System.map-4.4.0-53-generic
config-4.4.0-127-generic memtest86+.bin vmlinuz-4.4.0-127-generic
config-4.4.0-53-generic memtest86+.elf vmlinuz-4.4.0-53-generic
efi/ memtest86+_multiboot.bin
grub/ retpoline-4.4.0-127-generic
yebeni@YBK-ASUS-UX303LB ~ $
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

because I have tried to install the latest kernel generic. But it seems to fail much more because of dependencies, according
the output returned.

After rebooting, an
$uname -a
command shows that it is the old kernel "vmlinuz-4.4.0-53-generic" that is still running

I can remove the latest intallation files but, I would like to know if something can be done to complete
the latest kernel installation. Even before that latest installation it seems that something is wrong in that directory!...
There should be things to remove without disturbing the system, but I don't know!

I have this
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
yebeni@YBK-ASUS-UX303LB ~ $ sudo df -h /boot
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb2 88M 72M 9,6M 89% /boot
yebeni@YBK-ASUS-UX303LB ~ $
------------------------------------------..

.......

I'm not sure it ever does say to remove old kernels.

These partitions are both too small - or at least /boot is:

Code: Select all

/dev/sdb2 ext4 88M 60M 22M 74% /boot
/dev/sda1 vfat 96M 30M 67M 31% /boot/efi
My kernels take about 60M each in /boot, so I don't understand how you have more than one.

Hi,
the /boot is really too small.

Finally I have solved the problem using the following:

https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1874651
and
https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=377994
and adapting some situations to my configurations.

Thank you to all of you.
