Hello,
Have started doing an open learning python course at edx.
Was wondering about other useful sites or books for a python newb.
Will do some googling but if anyone has any recommendations could save me - and others in future some wading through sites advertising stuff for sale.
Thanks
Bill

Here's a couple of sites:
A free downloadable book:
https://greenteapress.com/wp/think-python-2e/ Note - the 2 refers to the book edition - the book actually uses Python 3.
The Python Software Foundation
https://www.python.org/

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

Don't have so much knowledge of Python Language that's why just want a little help: What are some interesting things to do with Python? I want to make something related to big data or machine learning.

If you've never programmed before check out the Getting Started page on Learn To Code with Me by Laurence Bradford. She's done an incredible job of breaking down the steps beginners should take when they're uncertain about where to begin.
