Complete system freeze

Using Linux Mint 18.3 64bit...

My system freezes completely once or twice a day, requiring a hard reset with the power button.

Is there a debug system to pick up on these freezes and inform Mint/Kernel developers? Is Mint collecting these details in any way?

If so, how do I activate and use them and who do I report to?

I don't have a solution to your core problem, but I wanted to advise that you'll eventually corrupt your file system by powering it off that way.

As an alternate option, hold down Alt + SysRq, and type r e i s u o, waiting a second or two between keystrokes. This will (usually) shutdown your computer cleanly, and preserve your file system.

Unfortunately the second command does not apply to Mint 18.3, look for any error messages moments before system freeze in the logs using the System Log application.

With your hardware you may also try the latest kernel available in the 4.4 long term kernel series, newest 4.15 kernels can cause regressions on some hardware.
Update Manager > View > Linux kernels

If the grub menu doesn't show up by default upon reboot, hold down the shift key, select Advanced options and the 4.4 kernel to boot.

You also configured numerous additional repositories, who knows if any one of those can be the cause of the problem, Linux Mint cannot fix broken packages from external sources.

Thanks everyone, but the REISUB technique does nothing at all. I really think they need to have autoreporting for these errors, something that sends details upon reboot. Clearly kernal panic.

There have been many posts here telling people (noobs in particular) that shutting off with the powerbutton is a no-no. In the case of a total freeze: keyboard, mouse, touchpad etc all totally non-responsive, there really isn't a lot of choice. In a case like that, I have shut down with the powerbutton, then before trying to reboot the system, I boot to a mint install usb stick and run fsck on the drive. I've done this many times without any long term consequences. REISUB is great advice when possible, but it's not always possible! I had one laptop that froze like that, coming out of suspend about every 3rd or 4th time--one never knew. A lot of powerbutton shutdowns on that one. Well that laptop is now retired, but the hard drive (with the same load of mint 18.3 xfce) lives on in a better behaved laptop and is still performing reliably.

Is it me or was Mint 17 a better release? I've had that system freeze a lot and now I get a request for a software program wanting my Admin password for a change to the system and a download. Sure acts like the malware I used to get on Windows 7 years ago. I've tried to use the task manager to see what was running and everything seems to be fine. After several re-boots you would think that process would have been stopped a long time ago. I've enjoyed not having to have any anti-virus but am wishing for some software to be able to find this process that wants my password. I am running Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit (3.6.7) with a 4.13.0-45-generic kernel on an Intel NUC i37100U CPU with 4 gig memory and a NVMe SSD 960 EVO M.2 hard drive. I thought I was updated to the latest but I must be behind. I wonder if my NUC is upto the latest and greatest version of Mint. With my old laptop I had to down grade to LME desktop because of outdated hardware.

I won't say that 17 was a better release, but in four years running 17 Qiana xfce on multiple laptops, I never had a system freeze coming out of suspend. I only switched to 18.3 to get the newer applications--I love the xapps. I still keep a spare ssd loaded and updated with 17 to boot for troubleshooting etc. Last of the non-systemd mint releases. Mint 18.3 is a great release, but not as 100% reliable as 17. (for me, YMMV)

To answer your question, no, Update Manager will not repair a corrupted file system.

I also just realized that you're not the original author of this issue. You'll probably get far better results by creating your own post for your own issue, rather than trying to tack on to someone else's. You can try the Newbie Questions forum, if you think that's appropriate.
