Regular system freezes

Post by radar100 » Sat Sep 01, 2018 4:34 pm

Hi All,
I have an issue in that my system constantly freezes up and I need to hard reset as nothing else works for shutdown etc.
Here's some info on the system and logs from before the crash. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried it with the recommended Nvidia drivers installed from the Driver Manager ?
(instead of the open source nouveau drivers which you are using at present)

Hi Richyrich, thanks for the reply, yes, I have tried with the 3 options available in the driver manager -
nvidia-340
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
nvidia-304

I get the crashes using all of them. I also get "dots" flashing briefly on the screen and occasionally large blue blocks showing on web pages.
The crashes don't really follow any sort of pattern, they do happen mostly when I'm web browsing, but have happened when I've left the system on overnight with no apps open. I have had it happen a couple of times when rdp'd to work using xfreerdp.

Just happened while typing the above reply - logs here

Just happened while typing the above reply - logs here
Please don't post reams of logs like that without enclosing the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers, which you can select by clicking </> on the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

The workaround for those AER errors is to edit the grub menu and add the pcie_aspm=off kernel parameter to suppress the messages.

Lots of errors from your pci express port ? (pcieport 0000:00:03.0: AER: )
and . .
mtrr: your CPUs had inconsistent variable MTRR settings
mtrr: probably your BIOS does not setup all CPUs.

Have you checked at HP's support website to see if there is an update for your BIOS ?

@catweazel - Apologies, will do that in future.

I've run pcie_aspm=off and we'll see how that goes

@richyrich - I'll get the latest BIOS version as soon as I have a chance, I think I'm one version off the last one put out for this model.
