Using a notebook as an internet server?

Post by pengyou »

Not sure if that is the right name...I have a notebook that I no longer use - an i3 with 4 gb of RAM. I would like to be able to use it for downloading files - I sometimes line up a string of files that takes 2-3 days to download, and the notebook uses very little electricity. Is there some way I can intrude the notebook into a network (or some other means) so that I can access the notebook from my desktop to surf and download?

You mean built a NAS? If so then it's relatively easy.

There are programs out there which provide remote desktop access, Teamviewer being a popular one & looks like it'll do what you want. Afraid I can't advise on setup and usage as I haven't used this or other graphical remote desktop software so far. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in, there are also some threads already on the Forum discussing Teamviewer, etc..

Thanks! Looks like what I am looking for...I will check it out this weekend. Remote desktop access is probably the key phrase.

I'll be looking into it too. I currently use ssh for remote admin but it would be handy to be able to control graphical programs on the media server machine from other computers, without having to switch the TV input. :) Also less keyboard juggling.

Guys, FreeNas.org does all that and is media centric. You can stream, download, share files, has a GUI..etc...
