Mint 19 or LMDE 3

Post by kevin987 »

I'm using Mint 17.3 Cinnamon, but support ends in April 2019.

For those that have tried both Mint 19 and LMDE 3, which one do you prefer.

Personally I prefer LMDE 3 over Mint 19. LMDE just "feels" more stable and plays better with my hardware than Mint 19.

Horses for courses - main reason for picking Mint Main over LMDE would be support for PPAs if you need them, access to kernels newer than 4.9 if your hardware need them and of course the existence of non Cinnamon Desktop environments as options for the ISO. Day to day use little difference - LMDE Cinnamon is likely to be a tad lighter than Mint 19 Cinnamon and arguably more stable (mainly because the Debian base gets less frequent updates than the Ubuntu base so less opportunity for update related issues).
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

LMDE on all my computers (desktops wired to the router and laptops with Intel NICs) - like tdockery97 wrote, just "feels" better.

But, LM19 on both my wife's computer and the desktop I set up for the grandkids:
- I've changed the O/S on my wife's computer a couple of times and I think if I did it again (LM 19 --> LMDE3) there would be blood (mine) on the floor
- The grandkid's computer has a wireless NIC that is fully supported by LM19 but not so well by Debian/LMDE3

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm experimenting with both right now.

My pc was made in 2008. 1.8 Ghz dual-core with 4 Gig Ram. Just hoping to get another few years from it. So far so good.

Not a gamer, so that's a plus. Just web surfing, play YouTube vidoes from time to time. Check email with Thunderbird.

Prefer Banshee music player, but so far both Mint 19 and LMDE 3 are having trouble importing files. CD plays and rips fine. Song imports fine with this method, but it won't import from a folder. The player crashes when trying this with both OS. Mint 17 has no problem import from HDD folder. One workaround is to play the music file, which places the song in File System Queue. I can then drag the song to Music Library. Tried drag from folder to the music player but it won't let me.

Last week I installed Mint 19, so far it works good.
LMDE is probably more stable, but Mint 19 has newer programs
I suggest install them both to see what you like the most
