Can't find the stable linux kernel for mint 18.3 Sylvia
Hi
I have just installed Mint 18.3 Sylvia and I want to compile the kernel with specific configurations. I am new in compiling the kernel.
I have studied the tutorial provided in viewtopic.php?t=131433 but I cannot find the stable kernel for Mint 18.3 here: https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/
I would be thankful for any help.

I think this is probably the better guide (stick to Ubuntu's kernels unless you specifically need kernel.org's kernel):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel

+1. There's actually very little backwards compatibility in Linux so using 5 year old guides is a BAD idea.gm10 wrote: ⤴Thu Nov 29, 2018 11:12 am I think this is probably the better guide (stick to Ubuntu's kernels unless you specifically need kernel.org's kernel):

ALso, I think "stable Linux kernel" is a nebulous idea.

I'll try it, thanks.

The following lines are the configurations I want to compile the kernel of my installed Mint 18.3. However, the provided tutorial suggests to download a stable kernel version using https://mirrors.edge.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/. There are lots of versions here and I don't know which one to choose.Hoser Rob wrote: ⤴Thu Nov 29, 2018 11:16 am+1. Configurations: Linux OS must have kernel 3.6 or later compiled with the following configurations:
CONFIG_IOMMU_API=y
CONFIG_IOMMU_SUPPORT=y
CONFIG_INTEL_IOMMU=y
CONFIG_VFIO=m
CONFIG_VFIO_PCI=m
CONFIG_VFIO_IOMMU_TYPE1=m
Re: Can't find the stable linux kernel for mint 18.3 Sylvia
The kernel you are currently using is already compiled with those parameters. Maybe next time check before planning to compile your own.
Re: Can't find the stable linux kernel for mint 18.3 Sylvia
I don't think so because these are configurations for a special driver to eliminate the OS interference for accessing modern SSDs.
To verify the system correctly configured, I checked that /sys/kernel/iommu_groups directory is not empty but contains other subdirectories (i.e. group numbers). However, it was empty.
This is the link for the configurations: https://github.com/MicronSSD/unvme

I really hope you're doing this on a spare computer because you are in WAY over your head and are almost certain to completely break the OS.arghavanmh wrote: ⤴Thu Nov 29, 2018 12:19 pmI don't think so because these are configurations for a special driver to eliminate the OS interference for accessing modern SSDs.

Actually I am doing this on my own computer. Can you help me with the question I asked?Hoser Rob wrote: ⤴Thu Nov 29, 2018 12:25 pmI really hope you're doing this on a spare computer because you are in WAY over your head and are almost certain to completely break the OS.arghavanmh wrote: ⤴Thu Nov 29, 2018 12:19 pmI don't think so because these are configurations for a special driver to eliminate the OS interference for accessing modern SSDs.

Re: Can't find the stable linux kernel for mint 18.3 Sylvia
Well, the configuration is what it is, but if you don't believe it and rather want to follow the instructions for that driver written for a different OS using 3.x kernels then be my guest:
I'm with Rob, you're likely headed for disaster and I want no part of it.UNVMe code has been built and tested only with CentOS 6 and 7 running on x86_64 CPU based systems.

What are the chances arghavanmh will experience a kernel panic.
