Who are bot users?

While surfing the forum. There is a column at the bottom of the page 'who is online'.
In that column at the name of registered user there are some names which include the [BOT] like google[BOT] or google adsense[BOT]. What are these?

They're software programs that are used by search engines to index the forum, to make it searchable.

To be clear, not our software programs. The search engines visit our site to discover new and updated pages to add to their index. That's what those bots are.

Ok but then they must have to be available online all the time as they are just software programs.
But they are not seen online all the time.

They are site crawlers. They visit websites periodically. They have a lot more websites to crawl than just our forum.
