Running windows apps under wine, cpu to 100% all the time

Post by fernbap » Sun Jul 05, 2009 9:35 pm

Yes, as the title says, sometimes i call a windows application under wine and cpu load goes to 100% and stays there all the time, and even for about 20 seconds after i close that windows app.
Windows apps also take a long time to start sometimes (+- 1 min).
Did anyone run into this behavior and knows what is happening?

I am not sure what is happening but I can tell you that I didn't like Wine and switched to VirtualBox. Its free and runs a large range of OSs that take up a user defined amount of RAM and HDD space. Actually, I wanted to try the Win7 RC and couldn't successfully install it on my comp so I installed in on VBox with no problems at all. Another option is VMWare but you have to pay for the software.

Thank you for your suggestion.
Yes, i know Virtualbox, have it installed and it works very well. But it is is not a solution. Occasionally, i want to play some well supported windows game like D3 or NWN. You can't play those in Virtualbox.
They work perfectly under wine, except when this happens, which makes those games unplayable. Sometimes the only way to stop it is ctrl-alt-bcksp.
I also play chess online, and my favorite chess client is a windows application. Exactly the same happens occasionally.

Understood, but did you know that the latest VBox (3.0) supports OpenGL and D3D?

Yes, i know, but the problem is CPU, not software capability.
