Disk Cleanup

Post by shmu »

What is the recommended way to clear up space on the hard disk, after emptying trash bin and uninstalling excess programs?
If Bleachbit, what settings are recommended?
Should I delete old kernels? What things should I be careful not to delete?

Programs like Bleachbit are extremely dangerous, something akin to swatting a gnat with a sledgehammer. Removing old kernels is fine - I recommend keeping at least (2) that you know are working properly.

For me personally, storage is so cheap that being meticulous in space maintenance is not nearly as necessary as it once was. I'm still on a 2TB drive that's 5 years old; without my multiple virtual machines (and their backups/snapshots) I wouldn't even come close to filling it.

sudo apt-get clean clears out the local repository of retrieved package files

I would not recommend bleachbit as several posters here have shot themselves in the foot with that app.

Thanks for the reminder Pjotr, I've too been looking for a safe way to reclaim some space on my 16GB CF card boot drive.
