Help on using PhotoRec - Urgent!

Postby friedtofu » Tue Jun 19, 2007 2:39 pm

Ok, my friend was promoting Linux Mint and was installing it on his manager's laptop. It turns out that he did not backup the important data before going on with this plan. Somehow with the new installer, he deleted the windows partition and wrote in three Linux ones...

And it erased the important data that was on the computer....

I know that Linux Mint might be different from Knoppix, or other utilities, but what I'm trying to help him with is this:

Use Knoppix as a live CD
Use external harddrive as a mounting point
Use PhotoRec for recovering those lost important data....

So can anyone correct me in these steps I'm about to tell my friend?

Is it even possible to recover Windows files after it has been partitioned to a Linux drive?

1) Boot up Knoppix in LiveCD
2) mount the external harddrive.
3) Open up photorec
4) Hope that it shows the harddrive on the laptop (<-- i tried this on 5.0 Knoppix yesterday, it somehow didnt pick up the drives... can anyone help me on this?)
5) choose PC partition
6) choose the whole disc
7) filter out the files that is needed... (.doc, .pdf, etc)
8) hope that it works....

So can anyone find errors or help make that even more precise?

Thank you

(And the manager is really angry at my friend... heh)

I use a distro called DEFT for this type of thing.

but the most used tool i use is testdisk for recovering partitions.

if the partitions were formatted then the task is harder.
I'm a bit jealous that I don't have some fun like this to do.

Now where was i going? Oh yes, crazy!
