[SOLVED] New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
Got the latest kernel update installed (Kernel: 5.4.0-67), which makes the whole computer terribly slow, every mouseclick etc. takes at least a second or two to get noticed. Not good. Rebooting to 5.4.0-66 and the system is nice and speedy again. I hate it when this kind of update blows the whole thing to pieces.

Re: New kernel update screws up
Is this a support question or a rant?
If it's a support question read the how to get help section of this forum and post some useful info.
If it's a rant I'm not interested, it's not so unusual for this to happen.

Re: New kernel update screws up
OK, it's both. Question: why does this kernel update screw my system up? Do kernel updates get tested before rollout?
If we are to apply all the latest security patches, we cannot have it that systems become slower than slow.
Is there any other place I should post my feedback / do the developers look here for feedback?

Re: New kernel update screws up
Probably not.
But your warning proceeds.
You could edit the topic title mentioning the problematic kernel.

The kernel developers are going to have zero time for you, that's just laughable.eplm wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 22, 2021 4:07 am OK, it's both. Question: why does this kernel update screw my system up? Do kernel updates get tested before rollout?

You're just another noob expecting free WIndows. MS has probably 10,000 people testing obscure hardware configs. Linux does not. ANd it's not going to. And who's 'we'? Server operators deal with this every day.
This sort of thing is what system backups are for. Do one before applying high level updates.

Re: New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
Hello, eplm.
Nonetheless, with the myriad of different possible hardware combinations, which can be found in the wild, precisely such regressions do happen.
As you already found out that the previous kernel 5.4.0-66 still worked correctly on your machine, the following workaround is suggested:
+ Boot your machine with kernel 5.4.0-66.
+ Use Update Manager=> View => Linux Kernel. Select kernel 5.4.0-67 and click [Remove].
+ Wait for the next kernel release 5.4.0-68 or 5.4.0-69 or whatever the precise number will be, and hope the regression has been fixed.
In case you wish to help identify what the issue is, you might create a bug report on Launchpad. - Actually you might also start by finding out whether your problem has already been reported there. Maybe it has and some developer is already working on it. Maybe.
Best regards,
Karl

Not all systems have slowed down to a crawl by the way.
New kernels get tested by the Canonical Ubuntu developers, before they make them available to their users. You can imagine that they are not extremely keen on receiving complaints by a large number of users, whose systems stopped working properly, because the newest kernel release brings along some regressions.eplm wrote: ⤴Fri Mar 19, 2021 8:02 amGot the latest kernel update installed (Kernel: 5.4.0-67), which makes the whole computer terribly slow, every mouseclick etc. takes at least a second or two to get noticed. Re: New kernel update screws up
Now that was totally uncalled for, don't make me responsible if you're having a bad day. I already own 2 legal copies of Windows (as that is what is pre-installed in this world), but perhaps it might occur to you that I simply prefer to run something different. And I'm not a total noob either, I've been using Xubuntu since version 12 or so and before that, Ubuntu since version ... well ... 7 if memory serves me right.
Re: New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
That is interesting. I thought if you changed the subject of your first post at the top of this list of posts, then all subjects would be changed. Apparently not.I renamed the topic, but the replies are not renamed.

Re: New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
Let's call it a glitch, I've seen it before the first time I installed LM20 on this machine, right after the first system update that included a kernel update. The next reboot and/or system update (I forget) it was fixed again.

Re: [SOLVED] New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
My Lenovo 570 had the 5.4.0.70 kernel running & it was moving @ a turtle's pace! went back to the .67 kernel & it's much better! I don't know what you're running but it seems that you figured it out.
Re: New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
You have fairly new hardware. You may get better performance if you switched to the 5.8 kernel which is available in Update Manager.

Re: [SOLVED] New kernel 5.4.0.67 makes system super slow
This laptop is about a year old, so that is true. Thanks for the tip, but to my surprise, I don't see any kernel updates in the Update Manager right now, mine is currently 5.4.0.70.

That's because you're supposed to poke around in the update manager, for example, you might whack the View menu, read the options, see an option called Linux Kernels and decide to give it a punch in the throat.
