[SOLVED] Can I change my LUKS (full disk) encryption key?

Post by Cassandra »

Hi all,
I am new here, and new to Linux too.
I hope that I have put this question in to the correct sub-forum - it didn't seem to quite fit in 'Newbie Questions', because it's not a question about Mint per se, but is instead about encryption. My apologies if I was wrong, and somebody therefore has to move this thread to the right place.
Anyway...

Last week I bought myself a laptop that has Mint Cinnamon 20.1 Ulyssa pre-installed as its OS, and I got the vendor to put LUKS full-disk encryption on it.

The first time I switched on the machine I was prompted to change my LUKS encryption key from the pre-installed one to a new one.
Having done that, and having used the machine very happily for a few days now, I would now like to change my LUKS encryption key (password/passphrase) to something that is longer (& thus more secure) than the simple one that I specified back on Day One.

Is it possible for me to do that?
If so, can any of you tell me how to do it?

Please do let me know if I need to post an inxi report for you to be able to answer this.

My thanks to you in advance for your answers.

Slàinte,
Cass.

How to change LUKS passphrase in Linux
Thank you t42! :D

Even for a total newbie like me, that was really easy and painless 8)

As a former Windows user who is still 'scared' of Terminal, I used the GUI method.

I opened the Mint menu with my 'Super' key, then;
I opened 'Preferences', then;
I opened the 'Disks' utility.

I clicked on the partition that is displayed as LUKS, then;
I clicked on the gears icon, then;
I clicked 'Change Passphrase'.

The dialog window even let me know how strong it considers the proposed new passphrase to be.

Quick and easy :D
