Mint linux Hangs on shutdown

I have Linux Mint 20.1 running on an HP Envy x360 (2020) laptop. with a dual HDMI adapter plugged into USB-C (I use 2 external monitors). I have also updated to the 5.8.0-53 kernel. The issue is that I am getting random hanging on shutdown. I leave it a while, BUT after say 10 minutes it is still hanging.

I don't seem to have this issue when I was running the 5.4.0-73 kernel. BUT that causes another issue where both of my monitors are not detected.

Does anyone else experience this issue?. and are there any Linux commands where I could find this and post the results to the forum?. I'm new to Linux moved from windows a few weeks ago.

Hi Will. It might not be easy, but lets look for the problem. Lets start by looking at the prior boot cycle:

journalctl -rb -1 | head -200
The command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle in reverse order (which means the newest info is near the top)
If you want print it to a text file:

journalctl -rb -1 > out.txt
Then post the output in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>
If it happened 2 boots ago, then do journalctl -rb -2

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Hi,
Thanks for your help. I just moved from windows as I was constantly having sound issues where the volume randomly goes up and down. and there seems to be no fix. Anyhow after a week of Mint Linux. I prefer this operating system. Just the issue of not shutting down properly. I was thinking if it's just me that's having the issue, this info is useful for people who are developing the kernel to fix bugs.

Your computer needs to be using the 5.8 or higher kernel in order to have the graphics drivers for AMD Renoir to install. That driver needs to be installed in order for an external monitor to work.

Make sure you are running the latest available BIOS/UEFI version for your computer as UEFI settings can sometimes affect the shutdown process.

The log info does not indicate what the problem might be since we do not know what comes after the line listed.

The following command prints the journal log information of the current boot cycle and sends it to termbin. Let's see if there is any indication during start-up which might indicate the issue during shutdown. Run this command in a terminal:
journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

There were two kernel panics related to the graphics. I noticed you have Secure Boot on. I would suggest disabling it to see if that helps. This post indicated that setting had an effect on the graphic drivers. It's possible graphics driver related issues may be causing the shutdown issue.

I have disabled secure boot, and I am still getting the laptop hanging on shutdown. but randomly sometimes it does shutdown properly. Is there a way to see that shutdown process scripts on screen? cos all I get is a black screen.

If you press the Escape key you will see messages on the screen.

When it sometimes shuts down properly and sometimes does not, it can relate to either what hardware is connected to the computer or what software had been running that boot cycle. You might want to consider that to see if there is a pattern to be able to determine what the cause might be.

All I can think of after reading those is that maybe you should change your graphics driver, if that is even possible. My guess is that you cannot change the driver easily. I'll bet Driver Manager just reports that you are up to date on the drivers (Your computer does not need any additional drivers.)

which is what my laptop has. I have just installed the kernel updates, and i hope this resolves the issues.

That is not what the data you posted indicates. It indicates there is only one GPU. There is no Nvidia device listed.

I have updated the Linux Kernel to 5.11.0-22 and that seems to have fixed the issues I am having with the shutdown. I'll see how it is going.

I have just moved back to Linux too, with an older laptop. I have been experiencing the same behaviour. I managed to shut down OK once, but every other time I got the hang and had to force shutdown. I just realised yesterday, that the hangs seem to occur only when the battery is very low. If battery is fully charged shutdown occurs normally. No idea why, but it seems to be the culprit in my case anyway.
