Critical behaviour during the last 3 or 4 days
Hi,
This week I've been observing this issue at least once a day: at a certain point the system load starts increasing (I can see it from my CPU/disk load applet) and everything freezes, screen, mouse, keyboard. I cannot go to terminal in text mode, I cannot login with SSH (login is accepted but never shows shell). At that point the disk is highly active.
The only solution is to power down brute force.
Has anyone noticed a similar behaviour? I usually run the usual applications like Thunderbird, Firefox, Chromium, file manager, terminals.
It may have started happening since I started using Chromium simultaneously with Firefox.

Re: Critical behaviour during the last 3 or 4 days
I use Chromium simultaneously with Firefox all the time - continuously - 24/7 for weeks with 16 GB RAM. 8+ FF tabs/windows and 4 Chromium tabs. No problems.
I dont' think this is your problem, but lets eliminate it. Next time you think it is happening, restart Cinnamon (Ctrl-Alt-Esc).

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and don't omit the space after inxi!)
Press Enter.
Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Re: Critical behaviour during the last 3 or 4 days
It happened again. Graphics completely frozen. I was listening to music on Spotify and the audio got broken. High hard disk activity as before.
I tried both Ctrl+Alt+Esc and Ctrl+Alt+SysRq with no effect.
I could login through SSH this time and saw this:

Re: Critical behaviour during the last 3 or 4 days
You only have 6GB RAM so are probably using swap a lot. That would explain your symptoms.
You are also running with the nouveau driver, might be better with the nvidia driver.

Re: Critical behaviour during the last 3 or 4 days
I'm with AndyMH about trying the closed-source proprietary Nvidia driver. Launch Driver Manager and let it do its magic.
But I don't think 6 GB RAM as "only" 6 GB. On the contrary: I think it's rather a lot of RAM.
Apply these safe speed tweaks, notably the disabling of visual effects and the cutting down on the usual suspects, namely (browser) add-ons and such:

Re: Critical behaviour during the last 3 or 4 days
I had switched to the open-source driver because I was observing graphical artefacts when the system resumed from sleep and someone advised me to do it.
Coincidentally, yesterday I got a message from system report mentioning a new closed-source driver version and I decided to try it.
I also think 6 GB of RAM for GNU/Linux is very good. However, some applications are getting heavier everyday...
Let's see.
Thanks.
