apt-get error

Post by PRSoftware »

Hello,

I have installed Linux Mint Cinnamon but the update manager freeze every time I try to use it.

The command "sudo apt-get update" is in error :

Code: Select all

apt-get: symbol lookup error: apt-get: undefined symbol:
_Z15InstallPackagesR9CacheFilebbbRKNSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEEERK11CommandLine, version APTPRIVATE_0.0
What can I do to correct this ?

Open a terminal, run inxi -Fxxxrz, then paste the results in-between code tags.
like this
Re: apt-get error

I have started the package manager : it said a package was broken (apt-utils).

I uninstalled this package and I can run the command "sudo apt-get upgrade" correctly.

But, when I am connected through a VPN, the Mint Update Manager freezes when I click on the button "Refresh" or on the button "Install updates" (it runs without problem when I am connected directly).

To unfreeze, I have to kill the process "/bin/fuser /var/lib/dpkg/lock" : the update manager continues without problem...

Do you have an idea about the origin of this problem ?

Connected with the VPN, the requested command is blocked :

I have had that problem when my Nordvpn was connecting through some of the foreign country IP's because of their political blocking. Try to connect through a US IP.

It might just be something you'll have to ask the developers, unfortunately. Maybe someone has a workaround, though. I'm a complete noob when it comes to VPNs.

I am having what appears to be the very same problem, after the upgrade made in 6th July, same day as this post.
Details for anyone who want to help me:

Before I go to sleep I used the follow command:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade (I always upgrade this way)

It was finishing the upgrade, but I open another terminal window and typed:
sudo shutdown -h 60

The scheduled time was 4 times longer than necessary, according to the forecast

Next day, problem with apt-get, as follow:

Code: Select all

root@mindinclouds:/home/battah# apt-get update
apt-get: symbol lookup error: apt-get: undefined symbol:
_Z15InstallPackagesR9CacheFilebbbRKNSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEEERK11CommandLine, version APTPRIVATE_0.0
My OS is a Lubuntu 20.04 too much customized, with Gnome and other improvements.

I used a backed up copy of the system in virtual box, tried the dselect-upgrade monitoring the results until the end.
No errors in the process. But, afterall, it returned the same problem.

Started again, in another copy. Now with the "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and still getting the same error.

I will continue doing tests, and posting the results.

I'm surprised to have no other post in the internet about this error.

Seems odd that the `inxi` output you provided doesn't show anything at all about the APT sources; sharing the result of this command might shed some light on the matter:

Code: Select all

grep -v '^(#|$)' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* /etc/apt/sources.list
I wonder if something is misconfigured in one or more of those files.

Also, there's a chance this helped someone else having a similar or the same problem:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -f
I don't see how it would help, however, as it's to address dependency issues, but it's worth a try.

Maybe this'll help, although I would back up first:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1350955 ... ng-apt-get

Most of that thread is nonsense, but the packages are maybe a working version of APT. Maybe APT is just buggy right now, in Ubuntu 20.04, on which newer versions of Mint are based.
