[20.2] Very slow to wake from Suspend

Post by DanielCoffey »

I am curious as to why my Desktop is very slow to wake from Suspend. From pressing a key to being presented with the Password field takes a very consistent 34 seconds and I would like to know if this is usual. I am curious because it makes Suspend a lot less useful than I would expect.

The machine is fitted with two NVME SSDs and there are no Sata devices. Drive 0 has the grub boot and Win10. Drive 1 is Mint 20.2 and is not encrypted.

Oddly the behaviour was the same when I briefly tried Pop!_OS so I am wondering if there is a BIOS setting I do not have configured properly? At the moment the on-chip TPM is active, just in case that matters.

Try a BIOS update (when available). Check the support section of the website from the manufacturer of your motherboard.

I am on the latest bios for ASUS and my (older) board. It wakes normally in Windows so I wondered why both Mint and Pop!_OS were much slower to wake?

Try this:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the 5.11 series. Then reboot and test.

By the way: don't use that Ubuntu Cleaner thing (gerardpuig PPA in your sources list). Stuff like that is a software wrecking ball. Only clean safely, like this:

Thank you I will - I am still on the default kernel of course. I will report back later once i have switched to the new one.

No change on the Wake from Suspend speed with the new kernel I am afraid. The CPU fan does increase a little during the wait but not excessively.

Here is a fresh "inxi" grab so you can see the state as it is now. Any more suggestions?

You're not using encryption, so try turning TPM off and see if that helps.

TPM is now disabled in BIOS but the Wake time is still the same at 34s.

There are messages in the Logs viewer for this session and some are flagged as Important. Please could I have advice on these?

The NVME drive did have Pop!_OS briefly on it with full disk encryption but I deleted all partitions from Win10 so the drive showed empty before installing Mint.

I am still consistently getting a slow wake from suspend and need to get this sorted out please.

I am on a slightly different Kernel so here is the current system spec as well as the latest Log Viewer output. I have also replaced my older Roland Quad-Capture audio interface with a newer Focisrite Scarlett Solo and installed an ALSA Settings app to help hide the unwanted audio devices associated with my monitors and motherboard.

The PC sleeps and wakes perfectly fine in Windows 10 but is very slow to wake in both Linux Mint and Pop!_OS.

This thread watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#6 stuck for 23s seems to be one of the messages in your log. Maybe either swap or the PCI cable connection (the two answers in that thread) are contributing to the issue you are seeing.

It does seem to be a very common issue in Linux. I have googled through quite a lot of forums looking for possible solutions.

My swap looks normal...

Code: Select all

daniel@CaseLabs-S8:~$ grep -i swap /etc/fstab
# swap was on /dev/nvme1n1p3 during installation
UUID=34304720-d4ae-4164-8669-2ffbe6bae953 none            swap    sw              0       0
I will check the PCI power cables (2x 8-pin) to the card but they both have a white led so indicate power present. As I mentioned, there is no issue with Windows 10 resuming from sleep but maybe Linux is somehow fussier?

The PCI power cables to the GPU are fine... no sign of heat at either end (modular PSU as in sig). The card and cables are well seated but I swapped the two power leads round anyway. No change.

Win10 doesn't mind waking up. Linux clearly is unhappy about something.

I have also tried adding the nouveau.modeset=0 line to grub but that doesn't help at all.

Maybe somehow the services mentioned in this post are a factor?

I am on the 470 nvidia driver already. I can manually suspend by entering

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl suspend
but the wake is just as slow as when I use the keyboard.

From OP's swap output:
# swap was on /dev/nvme1n1p3 during installation
UUID=34304720-d4ae-4164-8669-2ffbe6bae953 none swap sw 0 0
With a single swap partition shouldn't that read: UUID=34304720-d4ae-4164-8669-2ffbe6bae953 swap swap defaults 0 0

I have gone back to nouveau but Suspend merely dims the screen and asks for the user password.

Returning to nvidia 470 and removing the second monitor (Apple Cinema Display 1440p) returns to the slow to wake behaviour even on one monitor. Just eliminating things.

If you need more information form me about the swap situation, please let me know what commands you need me to run.

Thank you all - I am really hoping I can get this sorted.
