FYI - Good VPN deal - FastestVPN

Post by phd21 »

Hello Linux Mint users,

FYI - Good VPN deal: FastestVPN for $20us Lifetime subscription with 15 concurrent users. I do not know how long this deal will last. They are located in Cayman Islands (Privacy Haven) so are not subject to the prying eyes

I came across some good VPN provider deals recently and this one stood out, so I thought I would share this information with anyone that wants a good VPN provider for $20us Lifetime subscription with 15 concurrent users. I am not being paid for this and I do not benefit from posting this.

Cyber Monday Deal: Lifetime VPN plan just $20 / £15
https://www.techadvisor.com/news/vpn/cy ... n-3811301/

Please note that although FastestVPN provides nice software clients for Android and Apple iOS smartphones and tablets, MS Windows, Mac, etc... they do not provide a Linux software client, so you must download their VPN servers in a zip archive files, extract it, then use the Linux Mint Network Manager to import the VPN servers you want to use, or use console terminal commands to activate the VPN connection. I would recommend using the Network Manager where you only need to easily import the servers one time.

Network manager.

Post by Wompoo »

Thanks for this tip off phd21.
I have taken up the offer and paid for it.
The "network manager" is totally new to me, so I will have to find my way around using that after extracting the files, as you describe.
Probably no challenge?

After downloading necessary files, do I enter them into the fields in the screenshot?

(My apologies for the basic "learners" question!..........

Jim.

You got it and it works? What download speed you get? Sounds too good to be true.

Hi AscLinux,

I did get the lifetime deal and it works well form me so far. I'm getting 96-98% of my ISP speed without a VPN. If you notice a speed issues try switching to another VPN server. I did have a slow down on their Miami, FL USA server, and switched to Charlotte and no issues; I contacted their support which quickly replied to my questions and said they'll check the Miami server.

Remember FastestVPN gives you 15 days to try it and if you don't like it, cancel and get a refund.

Thanks! I just paid for it, my IPVanish is about to expire this month, so it is just in time. I just don't believe it is lifetime for $20 ...

My IPVanish is $79.99 for two years, I thought it was pretty good ...

Hi AscLinux,

You are welcome...

After you have tried it for a day or more, let us know what your experience is.

Also, when I contacted their support I requested that they develop a Linux VPN software client. If you decide to keep FastestVPN, you might also consider requesting that they develop a Linux client for their VPN.

Some success, but not right just yet.

phd21,

I went through the steps in method # 1 (by mistake, sorry about that!).
Anyway, I got to the final line: "Initialization Sequence Competed", but then received the "bad packet" details below.
I was unable to connect to the Australia mirror. So, I took a guess at trying Poland, which seem to go through.
I will attach the terminal results below.

1. Please advise where I went wrong.
&
2. What are the follow up instructions? By that I mean, how do I add the VPN to Firefox or Tor browsers?

Re: FYI - Good VPN deal - FastestVPN

It will convert your whole IP connection, all applications will be using VPN to connect to the internet. Unless you want to create and use a separate network namespace.
BTW, to log in as root in a machine with root account inactive use 'sudo -i', this will give you root environment and shell. For plain root shell use 'sudo -s'.

Hi Jim, Wompoo,

I highly recommend that you use the "Method 2" the Linux Network Manager because once you add VPN servers through the Network Manager (NM), they are available from then on.

Click the Network Manager, then click the Network Settings near bottom, click the + plus sign at the lower left of the pop-up window, click import from file, browse to either the FastestVPN UDP folder or their TCP folder, then pick the Australian 1 or 2 server, enter in your username and password, click add. I would repeat the process for both Australian servers and any other servers you want to add. Then, the newly add VPN server(s) will be available when you click the Network Manager, just click the VPN server to connect. I usually use the UDP servers, but I'll add some TCP servers as well just to see if they might work better.

FYI: According to FastestVPN, the servers that show something like "US-stream-UDP", or "UK-stream-UDP" are optimized for streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, etc...

Hope this helps ...

Success!

I now have it installed and turned on.
Just about every single window in my operating system is different to the ones shown in the tutorial linked above. As a result, it took me some guessing to find and select what looked like equivalent windows and options etc.
However, it seems to all be ok now.

Apologies for all the fuss along the way.

Thanks for posting.

Jim.

ERROR notice 1005

Post by Wompoo »

Now I have the VPN installed and turned on, I am unable to connect to two of the American websites that I view every day.

ERROR Notice 1005.

I guess I should turn the VPN off each time I want to view these sites, is that the way I should manage this problem?

Hey phd21, thank for letting us know about the deal. It looked too good to be true, but I signed up anyway. Paid my $20, and now 24 hours later, and I still have not received an account confirmation email. I was thinking the "Free" (for 1 yr) 2TB of cloud storage was the catch and we would automatically be billed annually for that after the first year unless cancelled. And that may very well be the case, but I'll have to wait a little longer to see if they ever let me in at all.

Deal is still available, I just paid for mine. It's just too good to pass up for $20 lifetime. Received confirmations and credentials right away. In the one email it explains how to sign up for all the other services and upgrades which is where I think they make their money back. Not worried about any of those services for myself so won't bother with them. Thanks for the heads upon this!

Currently I use it only in my headless Devuan virtual machine. Firing it up was super easy, just ran 'openvpn chosenfile.ovpn' in a screen session as root. Even if it works only for a year it is still a steal.

I have been using the Trust.Zone, based in the Seychelles, for several years without issue...

To my surprise it still works. For $20. As of today, two dollars per month. To be honest, I did not think it will work that long. Speeds are not greatest, I get 1-3 MiB/s. But then again, for this money this speed is wonderful.
