How I installed LM 20.3

Post by majpooper »

Actually I didn't but my system info seems to think so.
I have been playing lately with the concept of Cinnamon on Debian netinstl (minimum CD).
Debian (bullseye) stable does not support the latest version of Cinnamon so just to test I installed Debian testing (bookworm) with Cinnamon 5.0. When I pull up System Info it thinks it linux mint 20.3

but really it is Debian 12 (bookworm)

Code: Select all

majpooper@1150z:~$ inxi -Fxxxxz
System: Kernel: 5.15.0-2-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 11.2.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 5.0.6 tk: GTK 3.24.30 vt: 7
           dm: LightDM 1.26.0 Distro: Debian GNU/Linux bookworm/sid

Interesting. I just installed testing myself. And mine doesn't do this.

What do you get for:

Code: Select all

uname -a
and

Code: Select all

cat /etc/issue
I think that last is the same as what shows where you login if you Ctl-Alt-F2 to a console.

Code: Select all

majpooper@1150z:~$ uname -a
Linux 1150z 5.15.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.15.5-1 (2021-11-26) x86_64 GNU/Linux
majpooper@1150z:~$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux bookworm/sid \n \l
This is strange - I have the same configuration on a test laptop and System Info correctly shows Debian GNU/linux testing bookworm

Mystery solved: in trying to install some mint packages from the una repository I ran into some dependency issues. I got some things installed like some of the mint themes and mintstick but others I just gave up because the installing the dependencies became too tedious. However it turns out I did end up installing a package that populates System Info with the distro info and maybe the version of cinnamon. I wish I could remember the package exactly - but when I removed it and did a reboot System Info is back to Debian GNU/Linux testing bookworm

What is an output of cinnamon --version? It still should be Cinnamon 5.0.6.

Just to confirm the same for my Debian 12

On a plus side Cinnamon 5.2.2 is already waiting (three weeks) for packaging
cinnamon - Debian Package Tracker
