[SOLVED] Screen getting horizontal lines after updating from Mint 19.3 to 20.3

Post by Beefy Capo »

I just recently updated from Linux mint 19.3 to 20.3, and there are now small horizontal lines in each frame that take a few seconds to update.

I've tried package updates, changing the kernel, and reconfiguring X. Note: A fresh install of Mint 20.3 doesn't have this issue on the same computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: The problem was that the intel renderer wasn't loaded (Old: "Driver: modesetting" New: "Driver: intel").
The solution was to create an Xorg configuration file
Xorg :2 -configure
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and then set the tearfree option to true.

When you make a major update like 19.x to 20.x it's advised to make a fresh install.
Or do it from 19.3 to 20to 20.1 etc.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.
Regards,
Deepak

Welcome to the forum, Beefy Capo.

There should not be a need to configure X at all. The data you posted indicates the Intel renderer is not loading.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 610 vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: i915
v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:5902
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: modesetting

OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 128 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.6
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

What did you do to "reconfigure X"?

Also, the data you posted indicates you are not running the latest kernel and gcc appears to have not updated in all places it should have updated. I do not know what might have happened when you upgraded to give advice on fixing gcc.

System:
Kernel: 5.4.0-91-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0

Creating an Xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 with Xorg :2 -configure fixed it perfectly. Thank you so much for your help!

Could you please explain what you did so it might help others? I have no idea what you did. It seems like your files were not updated properly which was likely causing problems.

There is no need to have a custom xorg.conf file at all unless there are problems with your monitor, but maybe the EDID of your monitor does not work correctly?
