Laptop unresponsive after suspend

Post by indiburger »

I recently installed Mint on my Lenovo 14e Chromebook, and one major issue with my system is that after I suspend my system (either through Mint or by just closing the laptop), the laptop becomes completely unresponsive. The screen becomes completely black with a flicker every 2-3 seconds. I read on another forum post that entering the password might work, but it doesn't for me. Only by completely shutting down the laptop and turning it back on does the laptop go back to working as normal.
The output from inxi -Fxxxrz is

I had kernel 5.4 active at first, and then installed 5.15 as a troubleshooting measure. I also initially installed Xfce, but then installed Cinnamon as another troubleshooting measure. Regardless of distro or kernel, I still have the same issue. I am really new to Linux and Mint, so I am not sure what to do at this stage. Please let me know any additional info that would be helpful. Thank you!

It seems, that your system has trouble with suspending. Do you really need kernel 5.15? Perhaps an older kernel helps.

Besides that: How do you shut down in this situation? Holding the power button?

And yes, I just hold down the power button to shut down the laptop.

Pitifully there exist hardware, which gives trouble with suspend. Not so often as with hibernate.

Welcome to the forum, indiburger.

One thing to keep in mind when troubleshooting this issue is a Chromebook is not a laptop. Laptop computers have a BIOS or UEFI and that is where ACPI power states for suspend are set. Most Chromebooks do not have a BIOS or UEFI which is why it is often necessary to visit Mr. Chromebox before installing a Linux-based distro.

I suggest doing searches for your particular Chromebook model and see if others have run into this issue.

I looked at the log you posted and it basically was not able to resume from suspend. In addition to a possible ACPI issue, it is possible this is an issue with the amdgpu driver and your hardware. I saw the below early in the log

Code: Select all

Jun 20 16:42:49 sri-Mt kernel: amdgpu: failed to allocate framebuffer (2211840)
Jun 20 16:42:49 sri-Mt kernel: [drm:amdgpufb_create [amdgpu]] *ERROR* failed to create fbcon object -12
Then there were several call traces related to the graphics driver. They start with the below lines

Code: Select all

Jun 20 16:43:08 sri-Mt kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------

If I counted correctly, that happened five times in a row. You're already using the newest kernel available for LM20.3 so I do not know what else might help this situation.

That's incredibly unfortunate, I was looking forward to using Mint long term. Thank you to everyone who walked me through this!
