New HP laptop randomly rebooting

Post by total_domination6 »

As the title says, my new laptop will unexpectedly restart on me. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger of it. It happens when browsing, working on LIbreOffice, or playing games on Steam. I'm currently dual booting with Windows 10, and have yet to experience the problem there. So far, the problem has occurred on Cinnamon by itself, a dual boot of Cinnamon and Windows 10, and now a fresh install of XFCE and windows 10. Also, every time it reboots, the UEFI says "no bootable drives detected. Please install on operating system." If I then hard boot, it detects Linux fine.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There's no way that is the latest BIOS, there's been a few updates in 2022 for AMD HP laptops containing newer AGESA to fix the stuttering and idle state problems apart from the usual secureboot certificate updates too.

@total_domination6 - check on the HP website and apply the BIOS update via windows since you still have that installed. You could even use the HP Support utility to update your drivers and firmware. It should detect the new BIOS package and offer to download and install it for you. Just make sure the battery is charged and you are plugged in for electric power instead of running on battery when flashing the BIOS.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Clean the internals of the machine, see that there's no lint in the fan and it isn't clogged.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

Thanks for the assistance, SMG. I went to HP website and ran their detection tool. It came back with a Bluetooth driver and LAN driver that needed to be updated. I updated those, then checked the rest of the available drivers. There are two BOIS drivers (see below), but they seem to be older than the ones I have. Is that correct?

HP recently repaired the machine because of a bad USB port and their report said they cleaned it, so I doubt that's the problem. (I was having the rebooting problem before it was repaired also FYI)
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Did they swap out the motherboard or daughterboard (if that model has one)? Although the documentation they gave you may not have indicated what they actually did.

Based on the version numbers (and not just the date) it would appear they are older.

Your original info:
Machine:
Type: Laptop System: HP product: HP 255 G8 Notebook PC
v: Type1ProductConfigId serial: <filter> Chassis: type: 10
serial: <filter>
Mobo: HP model: 8905 v: 83.21 serial: <filter> UEFI: Insyde v: F.26
date: 10/20/2021

I do not know why your system would have a newer UEFI version than the ones which are available for the laptop. It makes me think there is a setting in the firmware which is causing a problem for the Linux Mint install. I've seen many times where a firmware update cleared problems on Linux Mint which were not problems on Windows.
total_domination6 wrote: Wed Jun 22, 2022 11:03 amAlso, every time it reboots, the UEFI says "no bootable drives detected. Please install on operating system."
UEFI is the firmware on the computer and part of the hardware. It is not part of the operating system.

I do not know if there might be some kernel parameters which could be passed to offset the problem, but perhaps checking the logs will help. The next time this happens and you do the hard boot, run the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which "spontaneously" rebooted) in reverse order (so the reason for the reboot should be near the top) and sends it to termbin.

Thanks for the thorough response, SMG.

First: The info I got from HP after they fixed the USB says, "Part replaced: integrated circuit board PCB." I assume that's just the board the USB ports are on, but I'm not sure.
Second: It is strange that the laptop has an newer UEFI version than the website, but there's no sense downgrading, right?
Third: Sorry, I made a typo. I meant to write, "no bootable drives detected. Please install an operating system." Meaning that the UEFI doesn't realize that Linux is installed on the drive. This, of course, wouldn't be a problem if the laptop didn't restart in the first place because it's never happened on a fresh boot.
Forth: I will check the logs next time it restarts and post it here. Though, I haven't had an issue in the last two days (of light usage), since I reverted to the 5.13 kernel. (I did this before y'all responded BTW, just figuring I'd try something. I don't know if it actually had an effect or not.)
Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.

After watching this video Inside HP 255 G8 – disassembly and upgrade options, I'm not sure either.

I would not think so, but I'm not sure why the version is different from what they have listed. That was one reason why I asked what they did. If they replaced the motherboard then I would think they would return it to you with the most recent UEFI loaded.

To me, that message indicates it does not recognize that any operating system is installed--Windows or Linux Mint, but I do not know the details of how your dual boot is set up.

Well, I thought I had it fixed, but it just restarted on me for the first time in a few days. As I said, I reverted to the 5.13 kernel and didn't have the restarting problem for a few days. But I did have problems with the wifi and bluetooth coming in and out, so just today I manually installed the rtl8821ce driver. That seemed to solve the wifi problem, but the laptop just restarted on me again not twenty minutes after doing that. Here's the logs and my current system info.

I can't say for sure, unfortunately. It was not plugged in when it just restarted though. I will be sure to take notes of that from now on.

I do not game and have not run across logs doing so which means I do not know if these errors might be fatal, but they did repeat. That long sequence is the last thing which happened before power was cut.

Usually, when the operating system reboots, there is a line about rebooting. What I see in this log indicates to me a power-related issue with the hardware. The operating system had no advance warning something was going to happen so the logging just stopped when the power did.

Thanks again for the help, SMG.
When you say you manually installed the driver, was that before this reboot (ie. it should be in the log)?
Yes, that was before the boot cycle that abruptly restarted. I installed the driver, then restarted so that the new driver would take effect. I then tested the wifi by streaming some music, then I closed the lid.

35ish minutes later, I opened the lid and loaded the EA app through Lutris. The laptop restarted before it opened. After I booted back up, EA (and the laptop) ran fine for the rest of the night. I checked the logs and the above errors still occurred, but they didn't cause an issue.
Usually, when the operating system reboots, there is a line about rebooting. What I see in this log indicates to me a power-related issue with the hardware. The operating system had no advance warning something was going to happen so the logging just stopped when the power did.
That's not good. I really hope it's not a hardware issue. I've not had the issue on Windows yet, so hopefully that means it's not a hardware fault.
Do you have any suggestion on what I should do now?

Which to me indicates there may still be Wifi related issues because of all the error messages. However, I do not know if that is related to the "reboot" problem.

What do you mean the laptop restarted before it opened? The log indicates the laptop resumed from sleep after you opened the lid and the game was started before the messages stopped (which is presumably when the reboot happened).

The firmware (BIOS/UEFI) is considered part of the hardware and the firmware does have some controls over power-related functions on the laptop.

I have helped a number of people who found updating the firmware resolved issues they were having with Linux Mint even though they were having no problems in Windows. Each operating system does not necessarily use the information in the firmware the same way. I realize you do not have an option with regards to the firmware, but I wanted you to be aware it could be a factor in this situation.

At this point, I do not know what might be causing the reboot. but perhaps all41's comment about whether or not the power supply is attached might be a factor.

With all the RIP errors related to the Wireless driver, perhaps clearing those errors might help.

Considering Windows is stable for you, you might also want to consider the option of running Linux Mint in a virtual machine on Windows.

Sorry, I meant the laptop restarted before the game opened completely, not the laptop. I should have been more clear. I think I saw the game window for a split second, then the laptop restarted.

Thanks. I think I see what you mean now. Basically, it possible that the firmware just doesn't like Mint, right?

1: I definitely will monitor the charging status from now on and see if I can determine any connection.
2: I'll see if I can't fix those errors by Timeshifting and installing the driver better this time. (I might have installed it twice by mistake before.)
3:I really don't want to use Window consistently. I only have it as a backup really. I might try a different version of Linux though, if the restarting becomes too much.

I really appreciate all your help.

The log info does indicate the game starting and then "poof" the log was done without any indication of a problem. Loss of power to the drive/system (and there can be a variety of sources why that might happen) produce that type of log.

Or it does not like Linux-based distros. The firmware usually interacts with the kernel which would be common among Linux-based distros, but there are different kernel "tweaks" done by some distros so it could be possible some distros might work better than others.

Your computer is quite new so a newer kernel might help. Here is a way to install something newer on Linux Mint Mainline – Another Tool to Install Latest Kernel in Ubuntu / Linux Mint.

Okay, sorry for another question, SMG. But I think I fixed the wifi errors, and I'm hoping you could confirm that for me.
I realized last time that I installed the rtl8821ce driver from the internet even though they were already installed via the driver manager; it just wasn't being used because the system was still using the rtw8821driver that came with the 5.13 kernel. So I Timeshifted, which uninstalled the drivers I installed. I then blacklisted the rtw driver. The computer is now using the rtl driver from the driver manager, and the errors seem to be gone.
But now it says something about tainting the kernel. Is that a problem or is that just because I'm using a driver that doesn't come with the kernel?

It is not a problem. Driver Manager offers third-party proprietary drivers. If you check What is a tainted kernel in Linux? you will find your situation (below) in that explanation.

Code: Select all

Jun 28 15:15:47 dominc-HP-255-G8-Notebook-PC kernel: rtl8821ce: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
That change cleaned up the log a lot. :)
