[solved]2 crashes and no clue about them

Post by Noal »

hi there
about a week ago i patched some things including wayland sqlite java stuff etc. the system did run into several problems the last couple days, like progs wont start anymore etc, so i rerolled to about 7 days back.
most of the issues are gone, but i earned 2 hard crashes logs following.
i kinda dont understand the logs, maybe one of you can assist and point me to what to patch, fix, reset
i cannot change my whole system, and or update to 21, thats not an option, i have to work with what i have.so i need some sort of solution to get it back into running flawless state, i also have backups up to 3 weeks back, the sys did run flawless until the latest patchday, 4-6 days back, and now it runs into hard crashes

those are the logs

What things exactly? Be specific.

There's no system information there, copy/paste the text output of inxi -Fxxxrz run in the terminal.

BTW I've seen quite a few users posting long crash logs here but as far as I can remember no sign that anyone ever read them. I'm afraid that's something that people generally would have to be paid to do.

Hi,

You have got mate-panel crashes; it was frequent with Mate 1.24, it is less frequent with Mate 1.26.

I found that it arrives less often with Metacity + composition windows manager than with Marco (Control Center / Desktop Parameter / Windows, change the windows manager in the top right).

I also wrote a small script "Reset_MatePanel.sh":

Code: Select all

gsettings reset-recursively org.mate.panel
This script is on my desktop, in case of mate-panel crash I launch it and the panel reappears.

Regards,

MN

Support ended for the 5.13 kernel in August. You should upgrade your kernel to 5.15 so you have a supported kernel.

For some reason, your output is missing the partition information. What is the output of inxi -Pxx?

Your system has a lot of repos installed, including ones which are not for focal (LM20.3/Ubuntu 20.04).

This should not be the case if the problem was an update. Rolling back to a prior snapshot should fix a system that had a problem with an update.

mikenovember thanks for the script,i will try it out

smg thanks for your time, let me split my answers
1. pxx

Code: Select all

Partition:
  ID-1: / size: 7.86 TiB used: 696.78 GiB (10.5%) fs: ext4
  dev: /dev/nvme1n1p1

my best guess,i simply tried to copy paste side based and overjumped that line,it was under the bunch of hdds, and i missed it.

2. why 5.13, well there was a point where nvivida driver 515 did loginloops , you gave me a solution, to add some ubuntu code things, with a well done and simple list of stuff todo, and it worked flawlessly, since then, i simply did not update kernel to avoid removing it,
2.5 there might the ubuntu repos be from, else i dunno.

in case you want me to switch kernel, would it still work with the loginloop fix? i have some 5.15 patched,i just have to switch
somehow,i just wanna avoid loginloop..

I would suggest taking a Timeshift snapshot before trying the newer kernel.

I do not recall the specifics of the patch, but I recall the problem relating to the Xorg version and not the kernel. By changing to a different kernel, the Nvidia modules will need to rebuild.

that sounds tricky, how would i switch, then rebuild,if i can not boot into it..,

yes it was the
viewtopic.php?f=206&t=378808
posting
something xorg, dont ask me, i just followed your link, and it worked...matter :)

one sip coffee later, so, i think i have to down nvidia to 470 or so, then switch kernel (no idea how that worked, something update manager then kernel ..i guess),can google that. then redo the whole procedure with the 5.15 agian, just to confirm.
its no issue i just wanna be sure i get it right, and yes of course i TS before i do such stuff,i always TS +aptic

You have the patch in place, correct? The nvidia modules are built automatically when you boot into a new kernel. There is nothing that you manually build.

However, it's possible I am not recalling something specific from the patch. I will have to check it and get back to you.

thanks for your time,i will wait until you say so,
the link for the patch is in my former posting, atleast my link to your link to that post...

i use the time to figure out why my grub wont offer 5.15, i mean,.. i have the 5.15.0.45.54 installed,
but all i get to choose in adv. boot is sev. 5.13 and 5.4 , have to google more to figure that one out.
add..
in case somebody stumbles into this post
the kernel part is just

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
and it adds it

now i still wait for the ok with the nvidia..

// it said it adds 5.15 kernels, but i still couldnt select them in adv boot.. meh, more google it is

dont wanna spam, just an update
i did not need to patch anything, after i got to a 5.15 kernel,it worked with the driver

Code: Select all

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| NVIDIA-SMI 515.65.01 Driver Version: 515.65.01 CUDA Version: 11.7 |
|-------------------------------+----------------------+----------------------+
and a shortcut out of the kernel section

Code: Select all

ystem:
  Kernel: 5.15.0-48-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A
Desktop: MATE 1.26.0 info: mate-panel wm: marco 1.26.0 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 20.3 Una base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
that should solve some things,
now i focus on the "Metacity + composition windows manager"

does it work ,i dunno have to see atleast 48 hours ,if there is a crash or not,but atleast i try to fix ,what you two pointed out so far.and iam thankful for your time. i leave it unsolved, until then... and try to find the something about metacity which does not involve stripping of my privacy because of "meta" in the name

and back,
well it worked better, but now i got some nasty hickups,

one error was (i just typed fast,so no punctuation etc, and google said, the error is kernel based..,tbh no clue)
"inux error ecryptfs_encrypt_page error attempting to write lower page rc = -4"
its not as stable as i liked it to be again.

the only other thing i changed besides the 5.15 core, was veracrypt to its 1.25.9 version, for ubuntu 20.4,thats the one working, right now, but from googles info its kernel based error.. "shrug"

let me know if someone knows a thing about that, or how to fix it...
maybe it needs a new thread, even if its the same bunch of issues with a unstable mate.

That is an error related to encryption. I'm not familiar with the encryption software to be able to help with that.

Considering you changed the veracrypt version, I suggest checking to see if any bugs have been reported for it. If you can not find a reason or a workaround, you should create a new topic for it.
