Thinkpad extreme thermal issues

Post by hamlett22 »

Hello
I have a Thinkpad Extreme Gen 3 with a vanilla install of Linux 21. Thermals are fine in Windows 10 (fans run as needed to keep things cool) but in Linux 21 things are not working correctly. After boot, Lenevo boot screen appears and for a few moments the fans spin up. Then Linux starts to boot and the fans slowly trim back to a very slow rotation (less 2200rpm). After about 10 minutes my laptop heats up to over 80c (installed Psensor). Then I boot back to Windows 10, the fans kick on and cool it down to 45 - 50c. Furthermore, I had Linux 20 installed on this same Thinkpad before I switched to L21. I had no issues at all with thermals in Linux 20. The fans always throttled up and down as needed to keep the system cool in the low 50c range. So there is definitely something different going on in L21. I have searched high and low for a program to manage my fans manually but haven't found anything; only sensors, nothing that actually controls fan speed. Any suggestions on what to do? I am running Linux 21 with kernal 5.15.0-53-generic and Cinnamon 5.4.12 and no there are no programs other than the defaults running in the background or on startup.
To reiterate, the fans never spin up no matter how long the system has been running or how hot it gets. It got over 94c earlier today and still no spin up. And again, upon reboot to windows, the fans run and cool it down to the low 50s before throttling down.
Any help with cooling my Thinkpad would be appreciated.

That's so disappointing to read, TBH. That's a pretty dire problem. The only thing which comes to mind is that your laptop isn't (yet?) properly supported under Linux (perhaps evidently), or at least under your kernel, so I would try a more modern kernel. Have a look in Mint Update, for the list of kernels (I forget the option), to see if there's something newer available. One thing I see some people doing lately, is installing a much newer 'oem' kernel from the standard repositories. Food for thought.
I'm also Terminalforlife on GitHub.

That model came out over a year and a half ago AFAIK, that shouldn';t be too new.

You need to post better system info, the make/model is not useful. Copy/paste the text output of inxi -Fxxxrz run in the terminal.

Re: Thinkpad extreme thermal issues

Post by elgl »

Just came across this thread and wanted to let you know that I had the same behavior on my Thinkpad P1 gen 4. In the end it turned out that the thermald service was running when it shouldn't. The P1 gen 4 isn't a supported platform for thermald. Sometimes it would start and sometimes it would terminate itself like it should. It seems it's platform check isn't 100% reliable. If thermald starts on my P1 gen 4 it causes really bad throttling. The CPU temp would be stuck at 50 C, but the fans would be in their lowest speed, even when a demanding task is running.

To check if this is the case for you, you could run 'sudo systemctl status thermald'. In case the following line shows up, it detected that it shouldn't run. In case it doesn't it might be running, when it shouldn't.

Code: Select all

/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/dytc_lapmode] present: Thermald can't run on this platform
You can check if this makes a difference for you:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl mask thermald
Reboot & test.

To revert the change in case it doesn't make a difference:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl unmask thermald
Reboot.
