Hard drive cleaners etc for Linux

Post by Peter4933 »

I have recently graduated to Linux from Microsoft XP and have been used to using various software tools to make things run smoothly. I used Jv16 Power Tools to clean the registry. ( I presume this is not needed on Linux though). White Canyon's Secure Clean to clean the hard drive and clear internet activity. Raxco's Perfect Disc to defrag the hard drive. Lavasoft's Adaware spyway software and ESET's NOD 32 Anti Virus. Can anyone advise if there are equivalent's on Linux and are they necessary. Surely you must need to clear the junk off the hard drive from time to time.
Comments and advise fron anyone will be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Peter4933.

Short answer: Nope, we don't need that. :D

Long answer: If there is any "junk" then it is there because you actively and with full awareness and knowledge installed it. Just de-install it again, voila, done.

Other than that the only thing I'd suggest "cleaning up" from time to time are your ~/.googleearth and ~/.thumbnails directories inside your home folder ... those two can grow big over the years. Cleaning up is easy: Just delete them.

Another thing to do as superuser "root" is to keep an eye on the various logs in /var/log/ ... all the old log files get packed and usually have an ending *.gz .... So if you are sure you will never ever again look at those system logs you can delete them too.

Code: Select all

sudo rm -i /var/log/*.gz
But that's about it. Most users never ever even do any of this what I wrote here and have no troubles whatsoever with their systems :D

Peter 4933, as you can see, you're not only in a different ball game - but you're in a completely different ballpark.

Welcome to the ballpark Peter4933. Mint is the first best step in the recovery process from windows worry-mania. I found leaving windows not only a clamming experience, but also a financially liberating experience as well!

Celena is the next version, and currently the object of all fantasies...
I don't have a solution, but I do admire the problem.
