Burning disks seems to freeze daryna

Post by NiksaVel »

Hey all,

some1 pls help me out... I've never experienced a problem like this b4... I have pulled myself together a new comp made of old parts which seems to work perfectly with mint, but I have only one problem... when I attempt to burn a dvd, approx. once in 3 burns, the system hangs right after it starts burning. The system is not frozen, just VERY unresponsive - there's a 20 sec lag after tryng to move the mouse and such. It doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+bkspc or ctrl+alt+f1... I've tried leaving it to burn the disk for 1.5 hrs but nothing happened... drive was still spinning like crazy and computer experienced the same symptoms. All I'm left with is hard reboot and reloading with a messed up disk which I have to throw away. I've already messed up 10 dvds

I can vouch that the burner itself is functional, as I was using it for months in my other computer with no prob whatsoever. I've tried k3b, gnomebaker and brasero with same results.
Computer is Athlon 1600XP /w 512 RAM, running daryna.

Some1 please help me out, this is really starting to freak me out!

Here's a little update... I've tried burning a disk with system monitor opened... it froze again and what I saw is two processes exchange all the time with 90+% CPU:
growisofs
hald addon stor

after exchanging for some time as the busiest process, they settled at 46% CPU each.

does this help at all?

this is still a MAJOR problem for me... considering downgrading back to celena... maybe that could help.. doesn't any1 have any suggestions here?

A friend of mine suggested that this might be a problem with DMA turned on... not really sure about that... any comments?

What I noticed so far is that:

a) after a fresh boot the first disk always burns fine, than the second or third freeze up the system
b) I've already wasted a dozen DVDs

Hi

First, what cd burning program are you using?

Second try these settings:

IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
dma = 1
keepsettings = 1

Another thing, it seems as though your cache may not be
emptying for some reason, maybe? how full is home directory?

Did you reinstall and keep old home directory?

If you are not using it have you tried K3b, and see if it flushes cache at end? (should give message)

hi...

I've tried k3b (my prefered prog) and gnomebaker with same results...

it's a completely fresh install of regular gnome daryna... new home and all...

I've just installed KDE edition I'll see if it makes a difference...

Hi

Sorry I never saw the bit where you stated what burners you had tried, there is one more thing, if you have your burner and your
hard disc on the same ide channel, (if you are using IDE) it can cause problems in Linux

I would definitly turn dma on, (you can always turn it off again)
and try the parameters above.

What is your make model is your DVD?

as a matter of fact yes they are on the same channel... I'm shutting it down to change immediatelly...

what kind of problems can it cause? I've never heard of something like that...

the burner is LITE ON DVDRW LH-20A1P with the latest firmware... it's a 20x dvd burner, although I've never seen speeds above 10x

I've just spent the bigger part of the day reinstalling the comp with daryna kde beta and reconfiguring every little thing to work perfectly, and once again the second disk I tried to burn is screwed with the same symptoms. After finishing the burn of the first disk, k3b reported flushing cache and everything as success.

No, I was mistaken, I have the HDD as primary master, and dvd reader as primary slave.

DVD rw drive that I use is secondary master...

I am really getting helpless here... PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Hi

Very quick reply - back soon.

Have you installed DVD+-RW/R tools, dvdrtools (growisofs) libk3b2,
that is what I have in.

Also have you tried unplugging other DVD/CD

Not sure what is going on but hare is my last log from
/home/nick/.kde/share/apps/k3b
[growisofs] /dev/hdd: flushing cache
[growisofs] /dev/hdd: updating RMA
[growisofs] /dev/hdd: closing disc

Nick-back in few hours

and here is the end of the k3b log file after burning a dvd with dma off... (it went down to 2x and burned the disk for good 30 mins)...

quite a difference at the end... one more thing.. I've also installed the dvdrtools you've suggested... any any1 make anything out of all this and help me get some sanity back?

Hi

I wondered if it was "really flushing cache" at end, if not that could cause freeze up in system.

You could create an empty Folder called k3b-cache in a partition that has 8 or 10Gbs of free space. Then go into k3b and Setttings and Misc and then set Default Temporary Directory to the location of that newly created k3b-cache folder, then check size of folder after burn, delete-recreate reburn.

In Suse 9.0 I had your trouble and could only burn second disc if I selected DAO or TAO in Burn dialog on K3b.

Also on one I had to disable audio notification-really!

Best I can do

thanks a lot! I also saw some posts about this TAO, DAO modes, but when I try to select burning mode, I only get offered one option, and that's auto! :(

I'll try the temp folder idea...

Have you got Cdrdao intalled? "Cdrdao records audio or data CD-Rs in disk-at-once (DAO) mode based on a textual description of the CD contents (toc-file)."

I thought it was installed by default

I'm almost afraid to say it, but it seems I MAY have solved the problem... I've done two things: disable DMA on the DVD ROM drive (which I don't even use anyway)... and install the dvdrtools package and after that it seems the problems went away...

I'm far from certain that it worked... I'll have to download some more material for burning, but I'll post back here... in any case the last few logs I got showed normal closing of disk and flushing cache...

I think that was the source of the problem - some problem with flushing cache...

Okay... II believe the problem is definitely solved as I've been burning DVDs for the better part of the day... every time the log gives a successful report on flushing cache and closing disk.

After doing all sorts of stuff to the comp, I believe the solution was the installation of the dvdrtools package... I can definitely confirm that DMA option on or off has no impact on this problem.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
