Microsoft has said that they will require UEFI on all computers that want to use Windows 8 as their default OS, but it is not the end of the world. UEFI does not automatically lock the computer into WIndows only mode.

It may, but there is an option, if the manufacturer wants to enable it, for the user to turn off UEFI if he desires.

Microsoft has stated publicly that they will not object if manufacturers activate this option. (In other words, if you are prevented from installing Linux on a UEFI equipped computer, it is the manufacturer that is locking you out, not Microsoft - at least that will be Microsoft's excuse). This makes sense, since if UEFI is enabled, you cannot even install a new copy of Windows - the only OS allowed on a fully UEFI enabled computer is the OEM installation, or a reinstall of that specific copy of WIndows 8. The OEM copy would be the only copy that has the correct ID keys for UEFI to recognize it as valid.

You wrote ... ? You read!

It's about ARM tablets atm. See here

@AgingTechnogeek:
It's not about UEFI or not UEFI (I have my Linux installed with UEFI enabled, that's no problem), it's about Secure Boot:
In January 2012, Microsoft confirmed it would require hardware manufacturers to enable secure boot on Windows 8 devices, and that x86/64 devices must provide the option to turn it off while ARM based devices must not provide the option to turn it off.

Yes, I had a senior moment and forgot that Microsoft is trying to pressure those who want to install Win 8 as OEM on ARM hardware to lock the system so UEFI cannot be disabled, thus locking in Win 8 as the only possible OS.

I took Win 8 for a spin a month or so ago, the Metro interface is absolutely horrid!

Anyway yes you can disable the lock in the BIOS unless the vendor restricts it. Any vendor that does isn't worth buying from.
