Hi,
Another newbie giving Linux Mint a go after reading about it!
Off to a mixed start so far, got my scanner and printer all going. Liking the experience (so far) but had some issues with the nvidia driver for my 750ti. When I installed the nvidia 384 driver everything seemed fine but then this morning the system wouldn't boot to the GUI. I did make some other changes following those 10 things to do guideS. It could have been that as I was changing the hostname and other files. I haven't installed the nvidia driver this time nor have I changed any settings, so hopefully it will last a bit longer but I am not sure if I should install the nvidia-384 driver as its unclear for linux mint 18.3 if everything is ok with it from what I see.
Sorry my introduction turned into a question but looking forward to learning more about the OS!

Hello Cododromo,
I have a NVidia GTX 750 Ti video card and use the 384 driver. If I don't use "nomodeset", weird things happen - sometimes my PC boots, but more often it doesn't. With "nomodeset" it boots reliably. See here for how to use this at boot time (scroll down to "Solving freezes during the boot sequence"):

If that works for you, it's easy to make that permanent. Open /etc/default/grub as root and add nomodeset to the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT (make sure it is in between the quotes), save the file, and then open a terminal and run

Code: Select all
sudo update-grub
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.
Re: Yet another newbie
Thanks, for the welcome and thanks slipstick. I'll take a look into that.
Re: Yet another newbie
Just done that. Hopefully should be fine now. Running the driver so we will see how it goes.
