Hello all. Linux noob trying Mint 17 out! :)

Post by ekim »

Hello all.

I just installed Mint 17 Cinnamon, I think it called and just playing around with it so time will tell!

I am pretty new to linux and I have played around with it many moons ago off and on. I have tried various distro's like Mint, Suse, Ubuntu, Puppy, Knoppix and Redhat for the most part over the years but usually find something I cannot do within linux so I quit using it and go back to Windows! My personal favs were Suse, Ubuntu and Mint.

Usually it is something that wont work like my printer, my camera (getting pics off) or sharing/accessing my Windows "data" driver where all my files are kept. I hope this version makes some of that easier but so far I have installed the printer, which if found but wont print out a test page.

Thx.
Mike

P.S. My goal is to get it setup to use as my file server, whether I am in my network (at home) or outside my network to access my files on my tablet. Using my printer and just learning! :)

Welcome aboard, ekim! Regarding your printer, the best source for information on which printers will work with Linux is:

https://www.openprinting.org/printers

For some of them, there are tricks you need to know, and this website will usually have the tricks.

Thanks for the welcomes!

We used to say that Canon printers came in three varieties: paperweight, doorstop, and boat anchor. Sounds like that's still true. I'm rather partial to HP printers, they have great support for Linux. I understand Epson and Brother have been supporting Linux lately, too.

When I first started to mess with linux alittle bit back in the SuSe days I think version 8.04 or maybe that was Ubuntu's version....been along time! Anyway, I had HP's that I had the same issue with so when my last HP died I decided to go with the Canon and go figure, then arent any better.

My linux use has been a love/hate since day one for a few reasons. These the printer problem, always had a printer install problem no matter what brand. Trying to setup Samba to share Win files cross platform and then there was no knowing what program to use in linux to do what I want to do whether is was use my camera usb with linux box, download youtube vid or program using some bittorent deal that was usually slower than crap or photo touchup/edit or downloading a program and not knowing how to install it (got that right now too, ahh memories) to whatever. This time I will not try to get frustrated and give up on Linux even when I run into issues and I know I will cause I just installed and already have some! :)

Thanks for the welcomes everyone!

With one exception, a Brother printer, which worked OK-ish after a little persuasion, I have used HP printers with a fair degree of success.

I have been very pleased lately though that there is no installation required - on six machines over the past two-three years it was just a matter of selecting it and printing, even on a very ancient Toshiba I set up for my non-tech ex-wife.
Far simpler than my Windows experience with them.

It is just my luck! Even when I dabbled with linux many, many years ago, I have always had some kind of printer issue. Even when I had HP printers, it was my luck that the particular model didnt work.

Thanks! Hopefully, I wont run into too many snags that will cause me to go back to windows as I like linux, love the idea of linux but being a noob, there are things I need to do on a desktop that I dont know how to setup in linux and that usually forces me to switch back or keep a windows box. :)
