Just jumped ship from Vista to Mint 17

Post by Ranthe » Sat Sep 13, 2014 11:22 pm

Hi!

After a few months of planning and playing about with Mint running in VirtualBox I took the plunge just over a week ago and installed Mint 17 Cinnamon (64-bit) on my 7 year old machine machine to dual-boot alongside Window Vista (32-bit), and I have to say that I'm really enjoying the Mint experience. It's certainly faster to start (and shut down) than Windows, and so far everything "just works". I even managed to get my Brother wireless printer/scanner up and running once I worked out which of the 11 config options presented by the installer was the correct one ("IP address", it turned out).

And already I'm appreciating the lack of mandatory reboots and ease of updates / installs of Linux compared to Windows, allowing me to just get on with stuff without having my system bog down with another "mandatory malware scan" or similar. And because I've been using Windows versions of open-source products such as GIMP, Krita and LibreOffice the transition to using Linux apps has been pretty easy.

The only niggle I have is that the Linux version of my favourite game Oolite doesn't run as well as the Windows version, but it seems that it's less the fault of Linux as such and more that my old Radeon HD3200 graphics card doesn't quite cut the mustard for graphics-intensive games with generic Linux drivers. So it looks like I might be up for a hardware upgrade - does anyone have any particular recommendations?

Don't know much about graphic cards, but welcome aboard, Ranthe!

Hello Ranthe !!!!

I am in the same boat with old hardware. I did see a site or two where you can build a linux PC, Someone told me they don't make preloaded Linux PC anymore but I thats the case I figured this...
Look around the web on Linux PC and Hardware like...
http://linuxpreloaded.com/ you can look at ZaReason on the items they use to Build a PC and then figure get the config what you want (pieces) and then go buy them myself.

Also look at other members rigs what they are running and not complaining about. other peoples issues and the rigs they are running.

Oh the Oolite is ok, not as the original was, but still great.

Enjoy!! Cheers!!

Welcome to the Mint family forums

Hello, and welcome to the forums! :D

RE: Old hardware
I would recommend that you install a lightweight desktop on that old hardware. If you have more than one computer, put XFCE (my lightweight desktop of choice) on the old machine, and make it run like new. Keep that box around! You never know when you may need a testing bed, or a backup computer in case of main computer failure, etc. If you want to upgrade, its best to upgrade to an entirely new PC altogether, as that computer wont allow much room for upgrade. You can build yourself a roughly $800 CAD gaming rig, which will run flawlessly with Linux if you picked the right parts. I'm not a hardware expert, but google around and you should find something for around $800 CAD with modern hardware.

All the best (and welcome to the forums again!),
