I made a big goof

Post by fasimmons » Tue Sep 30, 2014 7:52 pm

I made a big goof and installed a new updated print driver onto my desktop (in the Desktop folder) and now my desktop is covered with files related to that driver. I tried to find an uninstaller for the driver and there doesn't seem to be one. I tried to simply cut and paste the files into a new folder and was stopped by the main driver folder not allowing access. How can I get this off my desktop without completely reinstalling LinusMint 17 and all the updated software that I have on the machine.

You can frame around the file names on the desktop via the mouse, select the left top corner and drag the mouse down and across to select the fame (with the files highlighted inside the frame
  • then drump them to the trash by moving the whole frame into trashcan..
Use the file manager for your version of Linux and select the files either by lasso method
--selecting a movable frame around the file selection or by using ctrl + left mouse-click to pick each file
--if they all start with the same name, you could delete that selection in the file manager

After dumping that set of file, install the appropriate driver for your printer via CUPS or the vendor's Linux driver if they provided one on their CD (if you have the CD..)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS
--see the print driver section and look into CUPS method of admin printing (on the internet)

Problem is that I downloaded the installer from a website and then it said to start in the " Desktop " folder. I didn't think to put the installer in a seperate folder and when it started, it just took over and placed all of it's support files and folders on the desktop. This was the website: plipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html and the downloaded file was : HPLIP 3.14.6:. This was an open source website that had an updated driver for the HP Photosmart Plus b210a printer. The installation file said to down load the installer to your desk top but then didn't say that you should place it somewhere else. As you can see..... I'm an idiot.....

--that files install setup with screens from the Mint link (source page..)

HPLIP is a standard install and available within the repositories for HP based printers or all-in-one devices.

--there is the manual method: otherwise you can use the DEB file (those files that are used in the repositories and packaged into a DEBian format to enable single click installs from the GUI (desktop environment: your login screen)
