Not New, Just MIA

Post by realitykid »

Hello all! So, I'm not exactly new here. Not sure how many people remember me as I probably wasn't too terribly helpful before. However, I have been gone for a little while.

A lot has happened during my hiatus in my tech, and personal, life. First off, I am no longer using my Gateway laptop. Instead, I'm running Mint on an older MacBook. This isn't exactly out of want, just out of necessity due to recent developments in my life.

Last summer, when I was 21, I got married to who I thought would be my life partner. Back in February, however, I learned that she really wasn't as committed to the idea as she had originally let on. As such, she requested a divorce from me. So, I was left with no option other than to go back to my mother's house and live there. Right now, I just don't have the space to set up my Gateway properly. So, the MacBook is the best option for me (and it runs beautifully under Linux Mint 17.1 after a little bit of tweaking).

Last year, I graduated from college with an associate degree in computer networking and technology. However, I have yet to find my dream job. Instead, I am currently working at my local WalMart to pay rent, student loans, and other obligations. Figured that I'm at least building my resume. :)

As far as my tech life is concerned, I've gained a real appreciation for OS X after purchasing my old MacBook on eBay. Unfortunately, it only runs Lion, but it was nice to get a little more time and experience with OS X. However, because of how much of a resource hog OS X is, and the fact that Lion is no longer receiving security updates, I decided to install Linux onto it.

At first, I played with Ubuntu 14.04, which is actually quite fun. However, this time around, I decided to go with Mint Cinnamon because of it's elegant look and feel, and the fact that I can customize it better to emulate the user interface of OS X (seems fitting since it's a Mac).

Not sure what else to say, other than that I'm happy to be back! I've missed the ease of use, power, speed, and stability of Mint on my ageing hardware. And it's nice to see that it is actually functioning far better than I remember from the early Cinnamon days.

From a technical point of view it’s no longer tied to the Ubuntu schedule, so it could be released at any time, there’s no technical relevance between 14.10 and 17.1. Now, with that said, the 6 months cycle gave us rhythm and although quality and content dictate releases going public or being held back more so than dates or vague deadlines, the idea of a late November release is still there within the team and it helps us working towards that target.
